Then.. The body composition measurements were clearly wrong. The garmin had me at 6% body fat which is on Usain Bolt level which I'm clearly not. I compared these to my other tanita scale which gave 14% which sounds much better. I followed the garmin instructions for when to measure (ie not first thing in the morning, after sauna, etc) and i tried over a number of days at different times.
Contacted garmin support with all the information they needed and all they could offer me was to point me to their measuring instructions which I'd already followed. They said they weren't seeing any similar problems but I did find similar stories online.
This is garmins first scale and looks like they need more time to refine their product.
As a body composition monitor, it works fine (although changing where you put it on the same piece of flooring can produce varying results), but for me the unique selling point was it's syncing with the Garmin Connect app.
I have a Garmin Fenix 3 sports watch, and all my exercise activity is stored in Garmin Connect, so I thought it would be useful to correlate body composition, and body fat in particular, with activity levels and type of activity.
Here the scales falls down.
Although the scales connected to the WiFi network at home without problems, every morning I step on and off the scales multiple times in the hope that I will receive the elusive tick symbol on the screen telling me that synchronisation to Garmin Connect has been successful.
Sometimes I have to do it only a couple of times; other times I can step on and off 10 times, and still no dice. Sometimes after failure, if I try again after 30 minutes, it works first time, but then I'm showered, dressed and breakfasted, so it's useless.
Garmin product support has been slow to respond and ultimately unable to solve the problem.
So, a decent body composition monitor that unfortunately does not do deliver on its value proposition.
This puppy will be going back to Amazon, and reading the reviews (which I carelessly ignored), it would seem that I am not alone in having these problems.
it was only then 7 days after i contact garmin on emial did they bother to respond. it is faulty and i would need to return them at a cost of almost £50 to me. nope they have gone back to Amazon as well.
Seriously disappointed with all this as i have finally talked myself into buying them after having wanted a set for more than what feels like a year! i love garmin fitness watches and apart from a few minor glitches have never had such a bad experience. so disappointed :-(
