I have been using this Garmin Forerunner 235 since November 2016 for my marathon training, after 500 miles running in total I feel I know this device enough to leave some honest opinions.

Pros:
• It has features that can monitor your pace and give you alert if you are too fast or too slow, great for the runners that want to keep a constant pace.
• You can set alert to remind you to turn around after you reach a target that you have set at the beginning of your run, it can be after a certain time or distance.
• Once you finish the run, you can look at the data, such as average pace, time for each mile, overall heart rate etc from the watch.
• Waterproof means you can continue your training in wet weather (no excuse there).
• The heart rate monitor readings to work out your 'training effort' really helps me to know how my training went, whether I have push myself enough or too hard.
• It's lightweight and comfortable even when your skin begins to be a bit sweaty.
• You can customise the display that allows you to read the data during your run the way you prefer.
• The battery life is good, it's definitely enough for Half-Marathon race and Full-Marathon race (if you are not too slow).
Cons
• GPS tends to take longer during cloudy weather
• It doesn’t work with some charger, especially with those that can hold two USB cable.
• Crashed a few time and require a reset.

Garmin App:
• The app is amazing, It shows data such as pace, speed, timing, heart rate, training effect, running dynamics, elevation, calories etc in a more sophisticated format.
• You can see your running route on a mat in Standard, Satellite or Hybrid mode.

This was an upgrade on my existing running watch - a TomTom Runner which had been good over the 18 months I've used it but was causing me issues with the small text on screen due to my reading vision not being great.
Having done plenty of research, read reviews and looked at some watches in stores, the Garmin seemed to fit the bill with all the features I would ever likely need (plus more) and importantly good clear customisable data screens.
My first impression, once unpacked was how light the watch is, although it really is well made the plastic housing and general lightness give a false impression of it being a bit cheap.
When it's first turned on it takes you through a few screens to enter some basic data and decide a few settings, the rest is customisable through the Garmin Connect web app. I chose to disable the smart notifications, which will display messages and emails etc on the screen once linked with your phone as I'm not desperate to be constantly alerted to activities taking place on my phone.
It was charged within a couple of hours and ready for my first run. I love the customisable data screen which allowed my to set a readout for pace and distance, giving large bright figures that are easy for me to read during a run.
The rubber strap is comfortable, even when it it done up quite tightly to ensure the wrist heart rate monitor works effectively.
Following exercise the watch syncs easily with the Connect mobile app on my iPhone and the data is then instantly available for review via the Connect web app. The watch collects and analyses so much information that there is data galore in the apps and this is easily exported to favourite 3rd party apps such as Strava, Nike+, Runkeeper, and the iPhone Health app.Read more ›

Love my Garmin 235

Negatives;
VO2 MAX estimation will not kick in unless you go for a run outside using gps.
No automatic recognition of workouts like FitBits ability to detect when on elliptical trainers or other gym related workouts.
Synchronization between Garmin Connect and other popular apps seems one way (I would like the Technogym Mywellness cloud to be able to send data back to Connect to sync)

Positives;
Nice to wear
Waterproof
Easy to clean/charge
Nearly 1 week of battery in normal use (1hr gym session 6 days, all day heart rate tracking
Had 9hrs using GPS and heart rate while hiking with 32% remaining
Nice easy to add apps/clocks

Overall a good piece of kit. The data that it can collect is impressive and in conjunction with the CONNECT app/website let's me plan and train well.

The biggest down side is the HR monitor. It's fine during the day walking around etc, but only works 50% of the time when I'm running, apparently I can run a 6:30 mile with a HR of 100 :) I've just purchased a chest strap and I hope that will improve things.

If you are wanting to train using heart rate zones don't rely not the wrist based hr, buy a 230 and chest strap.

I bought this to replace my ageing Forerunner 410. GPS locks on very quickly and it synchronises well with Garmin Connect.

My big criticism is the wrist based heart rate which doesn't follow changes in effort (I used it back to back with the 410) so for any interval sessions I will still have to wear a chest strap HMR. With this and the HR sensor on the back of the watch being quite uncomfortable, I think that I would have been better off saving money and buying a 230.
