It’s a good looking watch but takes a few goes to work out which up and which down does what. Still learning. I spent a long while researching a GPS and I didn’t choose a touch screen watch but that might have been easier. Not cheap. It will have to do!
Clear display even in bright sunlight. Distance to front, middle and back of green from your current position. Options to score and display up distances to hazards and green (neither of which I use). Also gives duration of round and total distance covered. Battery life is good (at least 2 rounds). Gave 4 stars because, being an LCD, the display requires a backlight to be useful as a watch.
I love to play golf, but I’m not able to play as much as I’d like to and so, for that reason, I’m an itinerant golfer, playing most of my golf with a local Golf Society, or as a guest of friends. One of the things I like about “society golf” is being able to try new courses on a regular basis, but the downside is that with every new course comes a variety of new challenges, especially if you’re not used to the course layout. Which is where the Approach S10 is so useful. In the box is the watch, the manual and a USB charging cable. A full charge lasts for up to 12 hours in GPS Golf mode, much longer as a watch. In watch mode it displays current date and time plus sunrise and sunset times. Setup is easy and the controls are easy use. Based on your location, the Approach S10 automatically chooses the current course from more than 41,000 preloaded courses worldwide, then it provides yardages to the front, back and middle of the green as well as showing hazards and doglegs. When you complete a hole, and it automatically moves on to the next hole as you walk to the next tee. The watch is lightweight, attractive and comfortable, the hi-res, easy to read display fine in sunlight. You can keep your score on the watch and upload your scorecard to the Garmin Express app to keep track of your rounds. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of use from this clever little device.
I found the Garmin Approach watch very easy to use and it provided a lot of useful information. Before I got this watch I used a laser range finder and to be honest, I was somewhat reluctant to change. However, the fact that once I looked at the watch I immediately knew the yardage to front, middle and back of the green made club selection more straightforward.
The ease of getting the yardage to front and back is a significant advantage over any laser range finder, where it is quite difficult to determine the carry over a bunker or the run-out at the back of the green. Similarly, these yardages helped streamline the layup strategy on long par 5s.
The main disadvantage I noticed was that when I strayed offline there was no real way of determining how far I need to pitch out, where previously I would have pinged a tree with my laser device.
I don't normally wear a watch so the strap felt a little uncomfortable initially but then I never noticed it when hitting shots. Overall, I would strongly recommend this device.
I used this product on a golfing weekend at Celtic Manor. I really liked how it gave yardage the frontback of the greens and to the pin. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, however it didn’t assist my golf!!
