Garmin VIRB XE
Compact and Waterproof HD Action Camera
The VIRB XE action camera with G-Metrix, high-definition, wide-angle footage at 1080p/60, 12 MP photos at up to 30 fps and captures more of the action. It is designed for tough environments, VIRB XE is able to dive to 50 m depths without additional equipment or cases. An exposed microphone records audio that cameras in cases just can’t pick up. Thanks to a hydrophobic, flat, glass lens - underwater shots are clear while transitions in and out of the water stay unobstructed by droplets. With the ability to shoot video in 1440p/30fps and 480p/240, VIRB XE is ready to capture your experiences in detail. VIRB mounts feature professional, non-slip, Allen head tightening, allowing maximum torque for vibration/impact resistance.
Garmin VIRB XE Through WiFi
Line up a shot with live video preview, control and view one or more multiple cameras by connecting VIRB X to the Garmin VIRB mobile app on a compatible smartphone or tablet. This gives you the ability to playback and edit recorded footage, overlay G-Metrix data and push your videos to the cloud. VIRB X can even be comfortably controlled and configured from a compatible Garmin device.
With a dedicated photo button and the ability to shoot wide-angle 12 megapixel photos at speeds up to 30 frames per second, VIRB XE is designed to get the image. You can even capture photos while recording video. VIRB XE can also be set to automatically capture photos over long periods of time at customisable intervals up to 120 seconds. With Extended Timelapse, VIRB XE will sleep between shots, allowing you to maximise your battery life for exceptionally long captures.

Keep Going with Rugged Power
VIRB XE features weatherproof power contacts so you can connect to a vehicle battery or other power source to allow for long periods of uninterrupted recording even in tough conditions. VIRB XE also features a rechargeable/replaceable lithium-ion battery for maximum flexibility.
Garmin VIRB XE was engineered for better control and easy operation with a one-touch record switch on the top of the camera and a dedicated shutter button for still photos - just like your point and shoot camera. The solid click of the switch makes it easy to know that you are recording and gives full tactile control even if you can’t see the camera on your head or if you’re wearing gloves. The recording starts the moment you flip the switch, even if the camera is off.
Wireless HD Sound
Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, VIRB XE can connect directly to wireless Bluetooth headsets or microphones to capture audio in high definition. Whether you’re further away from your camera or you’d rather capture your motorcycle commentary, VIRB XE ensures your audio needs are covered.

Very happy with this for the money (£130). Battery isn't amazing but for £20 you can get two spares and a charger. GPS is a bit laggy but the overlays are great and the video quality is right up there. Mounted it in my friend's race car, sound was good, video was good and no annoying squeaks or rattles like you get with go pros. After 45mins of recording, still had 2 bars of battery. Also, despite the lack of stabilisation, the video is rock solid. Its also super easy to start/stop recording and know what's happening with the nice big switch. Overall, very happy. If the battery life was better and a 32gb card could record more than ~2hrs, I'd have given it five stars. The android app was a bit hit and miss but they've updated it now and it seems much better. I have yet to get OBD2 support working but that is probably down to my cheap Chinese adapter.
The video and GPS data is stored separately so you can sue use it with third party video editors such as dashware. Garmins video editor is allows hassle free overlay of the sensor data on the video. Camera is very rugged and well built. All the features work as advertised (image stabilisation etc) and i was happy with the video quality, lens correction and general ease of use even with the two button controls. The small display is handy while changing the settings and the quick record/ snap function is certainly useful and i am a big fan of.
However the battery life is very poor considering there is no colour display screen. I understand its jam packed with lots of sensors and GPS but again just 890 mah for such a power hungry device is just not adequate. If VIRB XE has to be taken as a serious action cam they have to improve on the battery especially since it's not even 4k. The product i received had a physical damage to one of its feet but for the reasons mentioned above I didn't ask for replacement but opted for a refund.
I've had a number of video cameras in the past and after doing loads of research I decided that the Virb XE was the camera for me. I have had it now for 6 months and taken videos of Laser and Duckpunt sailing. I've had no issues with the camera getting wet and the overlay data is excellent. Virb edit is also great to use although exporting videos of more than 5 minutes can take a couple of hours on my i5 Core desktop computer.
The problem is that I wanted to buy a waterproof camera / Video camera not another GPS device. I have never had a GoPro, so I can't compare it against that device but in my opinion the picture quality at 720p on my Nikon AW10 is better. I would compare the video footage of the Garmin Virb to my mobile phone and as for photo's I don't think I have ever kept one as even in really good lighting they are very noisy.
If you want to playback videos on a phone or tablet then it's a great camera, not on a big screen or for Youtube. In hindsight I would have waited till GoPro add GPS to their camera's or Garmin launch a proper camera.
