Stay on pace for your next personal record with Garmin Forerunner 235
Wrist-Based Heart Rate
Forerunner 235 uses Garmin Elevate heart rate technology. An optical sensor measures heart rate 24/7 at the wrist, giving you the option to run without a strap. Its colourful gauge identifies your heart rate zone and beats per minute in real time.
On and Off Road Running
A built-in accelerometer captures distance and pace data when you’re running on an indoor track or treadmill. Forerunner 235 estimates VO2 max, recovery time and predicts your race times for several distances when used with the heart rate. Receive audio prompts for lap times.
Once you’re done running, it doubles as an activity tracker, counting your steps and calories throughout the day. It also reminds you to move after sitting for more than an hour.
Forerunner 235 is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites to locate your position quickly and precisely whether you’re running deep in the woods or near tall buildings.

This forerunner 235 is brilliant. 3-4 seconds to find a signal, all week long battery, customizable watch faces and race screens, heart rate monitor, and best of all after my runs, while i am struggling to breathe back at the car, it uploads the data and syncs itself automatically by bluetooth!
Add to this the integration to strava and all the analytics you get with that and it is a brilliant bit of kit.
I pace at parkruns, and this tells me how many seconds infront or behind the ghost pace i need to be at. Awesome!
Well worth it in my opinion.
The watch is fast to lock onto a GPS signal, syncs easily with my iPhone, Garmin Connect and Strava. The permanently on HRM is a godsend, never having to find a strap means that every workout gets recorded. The footpod is well worth it if you run in a gym, more stats get recorded!
It is easy to setup the data screens so that you get the ideal view when running.
I get the occasional bluetooth connection issue (around every 2-3 months) but this is easy to sort out - if a bit annoying.
Battery life is around 5 days between charges for around 10 miles of treadmill and 20+ miles of trails
The smart notifications from my phone are very useful - although you may need to be selective, too many and it gets very annoying.
So I hit my 5oth birthday and figured I was still going running enough (3 - 4 times per week) to justify spending a fair amount on a specialist device such as this. I swithered over what level of model to go for - the Fenix's look nicer, but are sooo expensive - and this one seems to tick the essential feature list while not being *stupidly* expensive. I don't do gym stuff, or canoeing, or mountain climbing, just jogging and walking, so this suits me fine.
As it was also part of a birthday gift I also added screen protectors (first photo shows them). These are hardened glass - the version I got has a set of 4 (I think?) sheets so that you can swap them out if one gets scratched. Easy to apply, no bubbles. I'm still on my first one and no scratches so far (3 months constant wear).
I had a system update on first starting the watch out of the box (while on its first charge). The updates are applied from the Garmin app on the paired Android mobile phone, via Bluetooth. About a month later I got another update just as I was heading out on a circuit - it applied no problem and didn't interrupt my session or tracking at all.
I did have one blip where it kind of froze on me (I put it down to the extremely hot weather that day) - it was **very** slow to respond to buttons . Eventually I got it rebooted and it's been quite happy since. I think that was before the last update, so maybe that update was a patch addressing the issue (could just be coincidence of course).
Wearing: These have a silicone strap that can get quite sweaty underneath. You need to make sure it isn't too tight. For me, I find notch 10 about right most days (wrist can change size depending on activity/heat).
I did get a small area of skin irritation on week 3. I had not really taken the watch off in that time except for showering. I had also not rinsed it very much after circuits. That was my mistake. I swapped to the other wrist for a week or so, used a bit of hydrocortisone cream on the irritated skin patch until it healed, and now make sure I always thoroughly rinse the entire watch after a sweaty session (a tiny bit of liquid soap helps), then thoroughly dry with towel. It's back on my left wrist and no sign of any further irritation now I know how to prevent it.
An official metal strap option would be nice. There are a couple of after-market options, but they don't look particularly great. A proper titanium option would be ideal (I'm used to that from my old Citizen watch) - very light and non-reactive, but also cooler temp while wearing.
Overall, very happy with this. Not sure what real options exist once the battery stops charging, as this is not user-changeable. I think Garmin offer a refit (postal based service), but I don't know the cost.
I have taken to using this as my daily watch and it looks and feels great. Using it is simple, although setting up data fields can be a bit confusing.
Battery life is very reasonable and looks as though it will last 10 days, only turning on bluetooth and gps when required. I have purchased a screen protector to be on the safe side, as I really really like the watch. If you are into running, just starting and want an ideal companion to provide you with data, do not hesitate!
I am really enjoying this watch and I gives me all the data I need.
