Stay on pace for your next personal record with Garmin Forerunner 235
Wrist-Based Heart Rate
Forerunner 235 uses Garmin Elevate heart rate technology. An optical sensor measures heart rate 24/7 at the wrist, giving you the option to run without a strap. Its colourful gauge identifies your heart rate zone and beats per minute in real time.
On and Off Road Running
A built-in accelerometer captures distance and pace data when you’re running on an indoor track or treadmill. Forerunner 235 estimates VO2 max, recovery time and predicts your race times for several distances when used with the heart rate. Receive audio prompts for lap times.
Once you’re done running, it doubles as an activity tracker, counting your steps and calories throughout the day. It also reminds you to move after sitting for more than an hour.
Forerunner 235 is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites to locate your position quickly and precisely whether you’re running deep in the woods or near tall buildings.
Customise Your Watch and Your Training
No two runners are the same, and neither are their goals. Set yourself up to reach yours by downloading advanced workouts and training plans to your Garmin Forerunner 235 from Garmin Connect. Customise your watch face with any photo from your mobile device. Simply download the free Garmin Face-It App, choose an image from your photo library, add the time and set it as your watch face. You can also customise your data fields, and download widgets and applications all for free at Connect IQ.
See incoming email, text messages, call alerts, calendar reminders and more on Forerunner 235, from your compatible smartphone.
Concise, easy-to-understand charts, graphs, maps and more let you view your activities, track progress toward goals and wirelessly upload and share relevant data directly with the online Garmin Connect network. So, you can compete with friends or family members on weekly step or running challenges — and compare your results in real time, using the LiveTrack feature. You can also use the Garmin Connect Mobile app’s wireless connectivity links to receive current weather conditions, forecasts and smart notifications right on your Forerunner 235.

I have been using this running watch every day now since I purchased it 4 weeks ago.
Previously I was using a Forerunner 110 which I had owned for the past 5 years.
What I like so far about the Forerunner 235:
• The charging clip is much easier to use than on the forerunner 110
• The wrist-based heart rate monitor works really well
• The Bluetooth link for uploading activities to Garmin Connect rather than struggling with a charging clip
• Being provided with extra information about my running performance than from the 110
• The nice design feature that allows for a hard glass screen protector to be used within the profile of the watch
• The ability to adjust the strap for the perfect fit with very fine adjustments
• The fact that the strap can be replaced by the user with minimal cost or effort
I had been considering upgrading from my Forerunner 110 for some time as I was getting frustrated with the poor software that meant it didn’t charge when connected to the charging clip. I also had problems with the strap that had cracked and needed replacing which required it to be sent back to Garmin for refurbishing. (It is bad design that the Forerunner 110 strap is integrated into the case and can’t be replaced by the user.) The Forerunner 110 also takes a long time to acquire a GPS position.
I had looked at a number of Garmin running watches, but I wasn’t looking for a load of extra features. I just wanted a watch that would record my runs for analysis on the computer. I was interested in having a wrist-based heart-rate monitor. I was really unsure about wrist-based heart rate monitors as a number of the reviewers of these had mentioned that they are not accurate. However, knowing that the Forerunner 235 can also use a chest strap monitor meant that if I wasn’t happy with the results I could always just revert back to using a chest strap. I also liked the idea of this watch having GLONASS support meaning that GPS positions can be fixed more quickly than I was used to with the Forerunner 110.
Appearance and design
When I opened the box and looked at the watch for the first time, I was surprised that the watch glass face is slightly lower than the surrounding edge of the watch. It was only after a couple of days that I realised that it was possible to buy hardened glass screen protectors for this watch. I bought one and attached it to the watch which then makes the glass face fit flush with the edge of the watch case. I am surprised that Garmin hadn’t mentioned this in the literature for the watch, or even better, supplied a glass screen protector with the watch. After all, they are very cheap to buy online and worth having as they finish off the watch very well and also protect the watch glass from accidently being scratched. Overall the Forerunner 235 is functional and looks like a running watch.
Heart Rate Monitor
When running on a treadmill I have compared the wrist-based heart rate monitor readings I get on the watch with those that are displayed on the treadmill’s display which is fed from a chest strap. The results are identical, so I am not sure why some reviewers have suggested that wrist-based monitors aren’t accurate.
So far, I have been very happy with this watch. The GPS is ready within seconds of selecting an activity. I have found the wrist-based heart-rate monitor to be very accurate when compared to the readings provided by a chest strap.
The activity data provided by the Forerunner 235 is much more comprehensive than I was used to getting when using the Forerunner 110. This has given me some useful insights about my running performance. I have also started to wear this watch all day as it is tracking my steps, heart rate and other daily activities. I have found this additional information to be quite informative and not something that I was expecting.
All in all, this watch seems to work well, is a good price and hopefully will last as long as my previous Garmin running watch.
This forerunner 235 is brilliant. 3-4 seconds to find a signal, all week long battery, customizable watch faces and race screens, heart rate monitor, and best of all after my runs, while i am struggling to breathe back at the car, it uploads the data and syncs itself automatically by bluetooth!
Add to this the integration to strava and all the analytics you get with that and it is a brilliant bit of kit.
I pace at parkruns, and this tells me how many seconds infront or behind the ghost pace i need to be at. Awesome!
Well worth it in my opinion.
Activity tracking is accurate, estimated calories however are massive and I still can’t figure out why so I ignore that.
Heart rate monitor seems resonably accurate however I have no way of verifying this though.
Battery lasts ages, first week I had it I got 5 days out of it with 21% still left and that was with A LOT of messing about with it as it’s a new toy.
Alarm clock doesn’t have a snooze function which is a shame, but you can set multiple alarms to get around this. So far it has woken my up every time.
The vibration motor isn’t as strong as my old Pebble time so may occasionally miss a notification, but unlike the Pebble the Garmin puts a notifification icon on the screen which lets you know how many you have to look at.
Beat in mind this is an older model now hence the price being lower than its original RRP of £300, however software is still actively being developed for this watch and it has had 2 updates in the time I’ve owned it.
My wife easily linked it to her Strava account via her iPhone. She also uses a really good app called "relive", which creates a video of the run/walk just completed.
