Garmin Forerunner 25
From the manufacturer
Easy to Use GPS Running Watch with Smart Notifications
Take your running to the next level. The Garmin Forerunner 25 is an easy-to-use GPS running watch that tracks distance, pace, heart rate (when used with a Garmin heart rate monitor, not included) and personal records.
Watch yourself improve, Forerunner 25 tells you when you set a fastest mile or longest run to date. The Virtual Pacer feature compares your current pace to your target.
Stay on top of your fitness goals between workouts with activity tracking features. Forerunner 25 counts your steps, distance and calories burned all day, whether you’re indoors or outside. The inactivity indicator motivates you to move when you have been sitting down too long.
Stay connected by pairing Forerunner 25 with your compatible smartphone for text and call alerts and automatic uploads to Garmin Connect.
Additional connected features include live tracking, where you can let your family and friends follow your run in real-time.
Heart Rate Compatible
Use Garmin Forerunner 25 with a Garmin heart rate monitor strap (sold separately) to track your heart rate, zone data and active calories for any fitness activity.
Heart rate compatibility allows you to train with heart rate zones so you know when to push it on that last mile or when to reign it in. It also provides more accurate information about your calories burned.
Track How Far, How Fast and Where you Run
Forerunner 25 provides a thin watch with a large active display area.
Forerunner 25 is GPS-enabled and acquires satellites quickly for outdoor runs to track how far, how fast and where you run - even under tree cover. To track distance and pace when you hit the treadmill or an indoor track, pair Forerunner 25 with a Garmin foot pod (sold separately) which attaches to the laces of your shoe.
Long Battery Life
The rechargeable battery lasts up to ten hours in training mode or ten weeks in watch mode.

From the Garmin web site the recorded performance can be downloaded for use with Routegadget after orienteering events. When GPS is off this works well as a digital watch with time and date shown. Needs to be recharged frequently for use as a GPS device, but as a watch, with GPS turned off, it seems to run for at least a week (we have not checked how long it will last). There is lots of online information about the watch including videos, reviews, and Garmin instructions.
FIRST: First use was great - picked up GPS almost immediately (central London) and was happy with how simple it was to use. But in my neighbourhood (Zone 2/3, phone GPS has no problem), it takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to pick up GPS which is basically useless.
SECOND: I did not buy this for the activity tracker but I decided to check it out. First of all, this thing seriously overestimates steps taken (decrease it by 20-50% and maybe you get something more accurate) and wildly overestimates caloric burn, by a factor of anywhere from 20-100. For example, I spent a few hours at a shopping mall with plenty of breaks and it told me I had burned several hundred calories and taken more than 7000 steps. I'm lucky to clock 100 calories and 5000 steps when doing a fast walk/jog for 2.5 miles.
THIRD: No way (that I know of) to turn off GPS search without turning off the watch. The last charge on my watch didn't hold, presumably because it spent the charge searching for GPS which I did not want.
Edit - finally got it paired after a lot of messing about. First of all got it connected using a setting hidden away to troubleshoot Bluetooth, just scroll to the last setting. This allowed a pairing but it wouldn't connect on it's own but found an app which was aptly called "Reconnect garmin Watch" and now works faultlessly. Very pleased but will still held off the 5 stars, I shouldn't have to go to all that trouble.
