My kids bought me this growhouse/coldframe for my birthday, does this mean I'm getting old? Bummer.

It was delivered in a big box, well packaged and in tip top condition.

The lad and I put the thing together last weekend and this is my take on it. . . .

We took all the parts out of the box and laid them all out, screws and fittings too and found that everything was there that should've been. We took our time having several cups of tea and bacon butties (oop north you see) and such and the whole process took us about an hour and a half. The frame was easy enough to erect, there are pre-drilled screw holes for you so no measuring. You will need a phillips type screw driver. We found that the smaller screws that were provided were of a poor quality and upon screwing them in they fell apart and therefore the screw driver lost it's grip on them, you know, like the really crap screws you get from poundland! (other poundlands/worlds/shops are available)so luckily I had spare screws of that size from poundland funnily enough and so used these with great success! I only had to replace three.

I would describe the sections as quite flimsy/light in weight but when the whole thing has been put together it is much more sturdy. The polycarbonate windows are good and will definitely be easy to wipe clean. The growhouse has a hinged lid and two hinged doors which are kept closed by a little wooden latch. The shelves have a good tight fit and help hold the structure together. You are supplied with four metal corner base plates to screw on the corners where it sits on the floor and there is a hole in each one which enables you to drill into the floor if you so wish and screw the thing to the ground so it won't be getting blown away in a gale.

We bought this to germinate vegetable and flower seeds for our garden at the start of 2012. Assembly was not difficult. The frame is a touch on the light side but it was easy to attach it to a wooden base which has made it rigid but still portable. It has stood up to its first year of use well. The shelving is sufficiently sturdy and the top opens for ventilation. Take care with the corrugated plastic in the doors top and sides. It has withstood severe buffeting from wind and rain and is in good condition for its second spring.

As with other reviewers, I found there was nothing wrong with the basic growhouse except for the rather poor instructions and the crummy quality of some of the screws.

For the first, as soon as I had assembled the growhouse I felt like sitting down and altering the written leaflet to point out a few important points to bear in mind before you start screwing things together. ie. all apparently similar bits are not the same (and this is important), and that there is a 'right way up' for other bits and a 'right way round' for yet others. You only find this out when you have nearly completed it all and have to take it apart again (at least I did).

For the second - come on Gardman - how much can you really be saving on the cost of a few screws on an item that retails for £80? The difference between 'crummy' and 'decent' quality screws on this item must anount to about 10p overall, if that. I sheared off a couple of screws when screwing into the softwood frame, and they were only halfway in! I used some of my own collection of screws that I have laying around to complete the assembly.

Having said all this, when complete this is a really sound little item, and I am going to order another one to go right beside the first. I will provide my own screws an use my own 'on the job' training to put it together. Would have been 5* but I will give it 4* because of the EASILY RECTIFIED faults. COME ON GARDMAN SORT IT OUT.

Package came in good condition and on time. Putting together was easy, with no left over 'bits'! It's now sitting on the patio keeping my fuchsia cuttings and young plants going. So far it's warm enough, but if it gets too cold I'll put a lit tea-light candle in a lantern under the shelf to keep the plants from dying.

I would recommend this product and supplier to anyone who doesn't want to pay out for a full-blown greenhouse yet or at all, but would like to over-winter plants and grow from seed without filling up their window sills (and thereby not get nagged at by the wife)!

This item is functional and for its price, quite good value. It's important to note that it does not pretend to be very high quality and is made of fairly flimsy materials, but with care they should do the job required and last a good few years; the wood is treated with a preservative.. It looks a lot better than the tubular metal and plastic versions and so I think it's worth the extra expense. If you want a hard wood version you'll have to pay a lot more.
Gardman have noted the criticism of the screws and the current version has entirely serviceable ones. My only criticism is that the provision of guide/pilot holes seems pretty random; sometimes they're there for you to screw into, sometimes they're not. This means you could split the wood if not careful, especially when screwing the bracing bar at the bottom of the front to the sides.
In summary, you get what you pay for and I think this is worth the price.
