Product Description

About the Author

Heading up the BTO's Garden BirdWatch Team, Mike Toms is one of Britain's leading experts on garden birds. He is a strong advocate of `citizen science' and has developed a reputation for popularising the science of garden birds and engaging people with the wildlife around them. Author of the Garden BirdWatch Book and a regular contributor to BBC Wildlife and other publications, his knowledge of garden birds (and other garden wildlife) has helped to make Gardening for Birdwatchers an authoritative and highly readable book. Natural Gardens, formed over 10 years ago by garden and landscape designer Barley Wilson and ecological consultant Ian Wilson, brings a fresh approach to garden design. By working with nature rather than against it, they produce a natural form to a garden which is pleasing and beautiful to people and provides much-needed living space for wildlife. The main focus of their work is garden design and creation, with further expertise in ponds, streams, meadows, woodlands and other natural habitats. Ian and Barley live in North Norfolk and work throughout East Anglia. Ian & Barley bring their skills to Gardening for Birdwatchers, providing planting schemes that can be incorporated into other gardens.

As someone who knows (realistically) a bit about gardens and a lot about birds, I found this a helpful and stimulating guide. Probably the best bit for me were the sample plans. These included lots of ideas for different soils and different aspects which acted as a springboard to research the various plants listed and see what took my fancy. I also liked the dustbin-lid pond idea, which I'm keen to have a go at. Good info too on what gardens might provide that birds are looking for - food, cover, water, breeding and roosting sites. Nicely produced and well written.

Roll on the redwings, siskins, redpolls and waxwings!

I form my garden in a natural way to create a place where garden birds can visit and inhabit in a life-enhancing way. With suburbia all around such areas are gradually diminishing. I'm a Garden Birdwatcher for The British Trust For Ornithology, from whom this book emanates (Mike Toms is their Head of Garden Ecology). For anyone who finds their eyes continually drawn to watching the birds outside their windows, I wholeheartedly recommend they get in touch with the BTO. Gain a therapeutic pastime!
