Curious? How does it work?: The secret is ‘air root pruning’, a completely natural and automatic process.

Simplified: Air root pruning causes plants to branch and become feeder roots, maximising the plant's ability to intake water and nutrition, increasing growth and overall plant health. When roots come into contact with air, the plant reacts with a ‘self-cut’ of the affected root tip to protect against dehydration. It then begins at a different, more central location with new lateral root growth to compensate for this ‘loss’. This so-called air cut always happens at the edge of the air-permeable plant bag and repeats itself until the container is filled with roots and root tips.

The result: More roots! And more roots mean more opportunities to absorb nutrients. The plant can produce more flowers and fruits. And a positive side effect, the steady air permeability prevents harmful waterlogging.

These seem to be very good. I bought these as Amazon were out of stock of the bigger size, and I thought it would probably be a good idea to try the smaller ones first anyway. They seem to be extremely well made,the stitching is good all the way round and they look really nice, I love the green logo, they look more 'professional' than an old pot!

Grow bag replacement for tomatoes:

My idea was to use these instead of grow bags for my tomatoes, I hoped they would work with the Gardman Grow-Bag Cane Frame (Triple Pack) that I had recently bought - and they do! The fit is very slightly snug, but that's a good thing as that improves the support, the handles of the GardenMate plant pots fit nicely over the frames so they look made to measure. Hopefully I will get a few years use from these pots and save a quid or two by not having to buy growbags.

Time will tell if my tomatoes thrive in these pots, reports I have read suggest that the root formation is improved using theses semi-permeable pots so I am hoping for pounds and pounds of tasty toms. I will update my review at harvest time.

We bought these to grow potatoes and carrots down on our allotment as we didn't have room to grow them in the ground and have been using them since June, so can't give any stars on durability as they have only been used for a short while. However our vegetables are growing fabulously, the soil remains moist without drying out as in some other containers you may use. I think if you take care of them and clean them out thoroughly after each use they could last a while which is what we are hoping for. May even buy some more for other veg. Great if you are limited on space plus I think you could also use them as general purpose planters. Easy to move as well. I would recommend.

I loaded all five of these with a plant and soil which the bags held fine but they did loose their round shape a bit. When it came to moving the bags they were so heavy that I felt too much strain would be put on the handles, so we moved them by grabbing hold of the sides with the top rolled in our hands and this was fine. Therefore I cannot yet comment on the handle strength but so far they seem fine otherwise.

I bought these after reading the reviews and description, to replace my aging potato bags. I can see that they will allow air in and I have them in use already. They're quite sturdy and feel like you can lift them up without too much deformation, meaning you could shift the bags if they needed to be moved without disturbing the roots too much. Time will tell if they get more moldy than plastic and how long they last, but I have high hopes for them. The base isn't plastic or reinforced beyond being the same material and well sewed. In fact, all of the stitching looks and feels well done. For the price, I do have high standards for the bags, and so far, they're doing really well. I would replace all of the plastic bags with them, actually, even at this early stage, but they're already in use.

This product is great! I don't have much knowledge about growing vegetables, but with these bags you seemingly just can't go wrong - not even me!

I am using 25 of all sizes from 15l - 60l for herbs, Tomato, Peppers, Runner-Beans, and more. they are all literally exploding in these bags, well ahead of the same plants I stuck into ceramic pots as comparison.

You can't flood the flowers - it will drain perfectly. The soil seems to be well aerated and, if I have to move things around in my greenhouse it still is possible - even though I am over 60 with a bad back - this is not possible with the few big pots I still use.

The material seems of excellent quality and I am sure they will last for a good few seasons. Seems and handles are strong.

They also seem to maintain the warmth in the soil for longer, very comfortable for the roots.

Absolutely no negative point. I intend to build up my entire vegetable growing based on these or next year.
