This third album from Iranian-American duo Vas is undoubtedly their strongest and most complex yet. It's a complete joy from start to finish, and far more than merely background 'chillout' music, but a fresh journey each time you listen to it. I've had my copy of this album for two and a half years now, and it still moves me just as much as it did when I first bought it (which is to say, more than almost anything else I own).
It truly is gorgeous music, full of wonderfully layered soundscapes, achingly beautiful vocals and complex but accessible instrumentation. There is also, crucially, enough changes of pace and mood between and within tracks to keep it interesting - far more so than some of the duo's earlier work. It's this, for me, that keeps me coming back. It stirs the imagination, and the spirit, every time.
As for the inevitable comparisons, while there's no particular standout track akin to Dead Can Dance's 'Cantara' or Loreena McKennitt's 'The Mystic's Dream' on here, if you like either of those you'll enjoy Vas - and personally I find this album more consistently enjoyable than any whole album from McKennitt or DCD. I would also add that this is only their third recording: they've plenty of time to make a 'Mask and Mirror' yet! But, of course, YMMV. Give it a try; I think they've the makings of something incredible.

This album is incredible. Why? Where do I start? Joyful drumming - haunting lyrics in "the language of whispering souls" - it will transport you to a place of lost dreams and visions of India... sometimes soothing, sometimes uplifting - this album won't fail to change you in some way... buy it. It's worth it.

There are many reviewers here who know a lot more about the musicians here than I: the duet "Vas" are new to me, but I shall certainly be following both of them, be it solo or as a duet.
Certainly this CD is all things as described by others, yes with what may be perceived as a middle/far eastern bias (unsurprisingly, & all the better for that)perhaps in the flavour of Lisa Gerard, or is Lisa Gerard in the flavour of Azam Ali (vocals)?
Azam Ali is haunting, melodic, very beautiful, yet disciplined, & fabulously produced. Greg Ellis shows an amazing subtlety on percussion if I understand correctly that that is indeed him? Track 5 "Ceremony of Passage", wind the volume up here if you will...In fact, neighbours willing, do it for all the tracks & be enveloped....
The production/recording quality will be appreciated for those listening on a quality system.

"Why no voting buttons?" No idea.......

This is the only Vas album I to which I have listened. The paper insert has a listing of the songs but not the words themselves with the exception of some poem "...in the garden of souls" - Azam. The cover image is "Entwined Buddha Ayuthaya" 1988. Try not to get caught up in labeling and just enjoy "In the garden of souls" for what it is.
There is a nice traditional feel to this album with a comforting consistency from one track to the next. You can use this for background music what the warning than soon you will be so wrapped up in this that you will forget what else you intended to do. Regardless on what side of the fence you are about music labels under new age you will appreciate this album.

Love it or loathe it it grabs your attention with rythmn and texture. I loved when I first heard a track on NPR (National Public Radio) in the States. The singers voice haunts you very soul.
