Who would choose to destroy what they love the most?
Nightingale House, 1919.
Liddy Horner discovers her husband, the world-famous artist Sir Edward Horner, burning his best-known painting The Garden of Lost and Found days before his sudden death.
Nightingale House was the Horner family's beloved home - a gem of design created to inspire happiness - and it was here Ned painted The Garden of Lost and Found, capturing his children on a perfect day, playing in the rambling Eden he and Liddy made for them.
One magical moment. Before it all came tumbling down...
When Ned and Liddy's great-granddaughter Juliet is sent the key to Nightingale House, she opens the door onto a forgotten world. The house holds its mysteries close but she is in search of answers.

About the author

Hello lovely readers. Thank you for stopping by. Here’s a bit more about me and my books:
I’m the author of fourteen novels.
I’ve been a Richard and Judy book club selection twice and have shaken both Richard and Judy’s hands. I have sold over a million copies and been a Top Ten bestseller and still can’t believe I am lucky enough to be a writer.
I used to work in publishing editing some wonderful authors including Penny Vincenzi, Marian Keyes and Sue Townsend but my proudest moment was reissuing LACE as a very junior editor at Penguin.
In June 2025 my novel THE TREASURES will be published by Penguin. It is the first in a trilogy about a family, the Ravens, over a fifty years, from their beginnings to the present day. I am so excited about people reading it and can’t wait to hear what you think. I am really proud of it. I'm currently writing the second in the trilogy- more soon.
My favourite writers write the kind of books you find on holiday home shelves with faded covers and I want my books to have the same effect: Daphne du Maurier, Elizabeth Jane Howard, Rosamunde Pilcher, Penny Vincenzi, Dorothy L Sayers, Susan Howatch, Sally Beauman, Georgette Heyer, all of the Brontes, and of course Jane Austen.
I love musicals, karaoke, long hilly walks in the countryside, hedgerows (also Bramley Hedge), old Laura Ashley catalogues, Cheers and Frasier, peppermint creams and reading.
I have a very large fluffy cat whom we adopted last year when he decided to move into our house without consulting anyone else. It is like living with Ken from the Barbie movie.
I have two daughters. They are embarrassed by everything I do. Girls i’m only getting started, sorry.
I live in Bath, home of Jane Austen and Bath buns (but full disclosure have never had a Bath bun).
Last year I published my first murder mystery under the name Harriet F Townson, D is for Death, set in 1935 and featuring detective Dora Wildwood who finds a body in a library. There will be more Dora books, I don’t know when, but I adored writing it and her.
I am on the management committee of the Society of Authors, fighting for better deals for authors, talking about the dangers of AI, ghostwriters, bad contracts, ghosting, royalties and other issues facing authors. I volunteer with Inspiring the Future, aiming to widen aspiration for all children, and am an ambassador for the London Library.
I’m on instagram as @harrietevansauthor Please do come and say hello there.
Thank you. Love and good books, Harrie x

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 September 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis is a story across four generations of the happiness and suffering of the women who came to live in Nightingale House. Initially we meet Liddy and her artist husband Ned Horner living in the house she had inherited from her mother. They seem to have lived an idyllic married life in the house and garden but now in 1918 tragedy has touched them. But the story moves back in time to describe the time when Liddy lived in London and she and her sister Mary met penniless Ned and his generous friend Dalbeattie, an architect. Their interactions are the basis for an incredible saga and the repercussions continue into the next two generations. Reading of Liddy’s cruel treatment at home, where she is subject to gaslighting, is hard but her inner strength carries her through to a future with Ned.
In contrast, we suddenly move forward to a typical 21st century family, meeting Liddy’s great grand-daughter, Juliet an art historian, struggling to bring up 3 children in a troubled marriage. The descriptions of a teenager, small girl and a toddler are hilarious and realistic, and I could feel for Juliet as she tried to maintain her professionalism at work with so little support from her husband. Discovering she has inherited Nightingale House changes her life dramatically and is not welcomed by her children. In many ways I preferred reading about Juliet to the story of Liddy and of Stella, Juliet’s grandmother, but they are essential to the person Juliet is, to her love for the house and garden and her intense interest in art.
The descriptions of the garden, the Doll’s House and the Dovecote, used as Ned’s studio, are vivid and pleasurable and the context of Edwardian art, fascinating to read. A book which should appeal to those who like contemporary or historical novels with an enticing mystery to keep you interested to the very end.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2025Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseEnjoyable read and ,even though there was some gothic horror in the treatment of Liddy, it was not as dark as some of HE books. Worked out pretty early what the twist was with Stella but still enjoyed it very much.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThe cover and the good reviews drew me to this. This book was everything I want from a novel, two time frames, family secrets In fact it was just wonderful. The main character Juliet I did find quite irritating but I did warm to her at the end, her husband was a total p...k!! The story of Lydia and Ned was so engrossing this was wonderfully written with good twists. I didn't realise that I have read another book by this author until I'd finished this one it was love always which I didn't care for this seemed like it was written by someone else. I'm a big fan of Lucinda Riley and this was very much on similar ground to her novels. Very highly recommended by me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseReally loved this book. It took a few pages to get started, I found the beginning a bit confusing, but once the story started properly it became addictive and was difficult to put down. It's told from a few different view points at different times in history and the different stories weave together to come to a satisfying conclusion. Will definitely look out for more from this author again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 April 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe Garden of Lost and Found by Harriet Evans was another book for my book club. It started out a nice read but as there are dual timelines, and we switch between the 1900's and the 2000's it became a little difficult to follow and I was beginning to get confused with all the different characters. I fell at around 100 pages and put it down for a bit. When I returned to it again after a few days, I was determined to finish it and I am glad that I did. It has an interesting plot but I don't think that the characters were fully fleshed out, as there were too many of them. The book was very long too, I think it would have benefitted from being very heavily edited. Far too much description and detail (and characters) I am glad that I finished it but would not read it again, nor would I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThere are three main reasons why I buy a book... either the cover art draws me in; the reviews and blurb entice me; or personal recommendations make me feel I can’t miss out. With this book, I had seen it was a Sunday Times bestseller - which is a good sign; and I read a brilliant write-up on Good Housekeeping. Plus I love the cover....
I enjoyed meandering through this book and the story jollies along, backwards and forwards through time. The main character, Juliet, irritated me rather a lot. I thought the historic narratives were both more interesting, and more believable.
I loved the premise of the story, and I loved the Lydia-Ned elements. But for me, this book was just a bit too put-downable for someone with a very busy life to fall in love with. It took me quite a long time to wade through it... mostly because I usually found something more pressing to do. It lacked addictability for me. But I imagine it would be a lovely holiday read if you want to be whisked away and absorbed into a world that has its fair share of magic and intrigue.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseWhat a lovely read which had me so drawn in, I never wanted to leave the pages or have it end.
It has everything you would expect from a best seller and I’m actually envious of friends that are yet to dive in to the heart of the plot. The house felt alive in its own way so much so that I felt like I had been there. The descriptions were amazing with the added extras about the garden and how to look after it, a precious touch which enhanced it all. Huge well done to Harriet! I absolutely loved losing myself within the story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI loved this book from start to finish, finding it hard to put down. I didn’t want it to end.
