Product Description

Product Description

Set of documentaries charting American crime in the first half of the Twentieth century. 'The Roaring Twenties' is a look at the effect immigration and Prohibition had on the early years of the century. Two young first generation immigrants, Johnny 'Papa' Torrio and Alfonse 'Scarface' Capone saw the opportunities bootlegging could bring them and Capone went on to become the 'Godfather of Crime'. 'The Violent Years' is a look at the effects of the Great Depression of 1929 and focuses on the lives and crimes of Meyer Lansky, Charlie 'Lucky' Luciano, Frank Costello, Bugsy Siegel, George 'Machine Gun' Kelly, John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde. 'Crime Inc.' is a look at the links between two American organisations during the middle years of the century: organised crime and the CIA.

I ordered this item based on the description listed above (Brian Benben, Madeline Stowe, etc). This is not THE GANGSTER CHRONICLES miniseries that starred those folks, it is a documentary. Buyer beware.

I was also amongst those who purchased this, based on the description of it being the 1981 TV series. I blame myself partly, because I did not read the reviews, and I should have wondered at the low price I paid for it. I did not return it, because at the low price, as well as the interest I have in Mafia-related programmes, I decided I hadn't lost out as badly as I might have done. For the low price, it's a reasonable documentary.
However, I am disappointed that Amazon does not appear to read its purchaser' reviews, and still shows this as being the 1981 series, thereby misleading would-be purchasers, rather than amending this once and for all. This would be especially helpful, because if the 1981 mini-series does become available (on Zone 2, or other Europe/UK playable) , we'll then know it's the real McCoy.The Gangster Chronicles [DVD]
