This is my second attempt at trying to get a control pad for my Samsung galaxy Y android phone, the previous controller was an ipega controller which didn’t work because my phone was running android firmware 2.3 and the controller was running off android 4.0. Thankfully after a bit more research and perseverance I found the Gametel controller, which was the same price as the Ipega controller and according to the Gametel website supported android firmware 2.1 and above.

Upon receiving the controller and consulting the instructions manual I was instructed to download the Gametel app from “play store”, after a quick installation and following the instructions to hold start on my controller for 3 seconds the controller appeared in the Gametel app’s device list, much to my relief.

As I mentioned in my Ipega review I had bought this controller to play emulated games on an app called Happy Chic, if you haven’t got this app on your phone and you’re on this page looking for a controller for your phone then I highly recommend you download happy chic as it comprehensively collates all the good emulators available to android phones into one easy to use free app, and also has a fantastic selection of free games which are compiled into a easy to use and access data base, of all the games I searched for on happy chic I found all but two games!

Happy chic works perfectly with this controller and I didn’t have any problems setting up the button configuration for each console, I was even able to save a profile for different play styles, for example I’ve got a button layout for Street fighter on the mega drive which uses a 6 button layout and has heavy kick and heavy punch on the two bottom buttons of my controller, but I can load another profile which has a button layout for streets of rage 2.

If you’re getting one of these pads then be aware that they are designed with retro gaming in mind as it only has a D pad and 6 buttons and wouldn’t really work that well with a modern game, but it is perfect for nes and mega drive games as the D-pad was used on the original controllers for these consoles.

Overall I say the battery life is really good but when the battery is getting low I did notice that the controller was disconnected from my phone every 10 seconds, but it does re-charge quite quickly. One negative thing I would say about this controller is that it should have come with its own charging cable or plug, wouldn’t have cost much to include one, luckily it is the same charger for my phone as it is for my controller.

Another thing worth mentioning is how easy it is to pair and unpair this device, you hold down start for 3 seconds let go and the phone will prompt you to pair the controller, then when you are done simply press and hold start again for 3 seconds and the device will turn off, this is essential especially when you realise that by pairing this device to your phone it temporarily de-activates/replaces the virtual keyboard on your phone, so you have to disconnected the controller to send a text or look on the internet basically.

Aesthetically the controller isn’t much to look at and the buttons do feels a bit weird at first, but I don’t even think about it anymore, as it’s all about the games. Also the part that clips your phone into the controller is a brilliant idea really, as it fits my phone perfectly and makes mobile gaming easier when out and about.

In conclusion this is defiantly worth buying if you want to play some retro gaming, and the added bonus of happy chic means you have a almost limitless supply of free games on the mega drive, Snes, nes, master system, gameboy, n64, playstation, Nds and even arcade titles, in essence for £13 your turning your phone into a micro console with hundreds of free games on it.

I've had the Gametel Android Controller for about four weeks now, so I think I can give an objective overview of its pro's and con's.
In essence, the Gametel Controller does exactly what it is designed for. It lets you play games on your smart phone in a much more pleasant way than by using the virtual keypad on your phones' screen. The controller's keypad works quite well, and the buttons you push are directly translated to actions on the screen, so there are no delays or whatsoever. I did find that sometimes the diagonal directions are not correctly registrated, so your game character will move to the right/left or squat. But that's a minor issue.
Contrary to the virtual keypad on your phone, you can actually hold a button while pressing another one. For instance, while playing Megaman, you can charge your weapon while jumping or running. With the virtual keypad, this is not possible. Regarding phone type, I have a HTC Desire and a friend of mine a Samsung Galaxy II, and both were attached on the Gametel without problems. A phone that is wider that the Samsung Galaxy II won't fit, because the Galaxy II just fits to the attach point of the Gametel (it's a clamp).
The Gametel is quite light, but having a phone connected to it does not outbalance the whole. So while holding it, you won't have the feeling that the phone/Gametel will fall out of your hands because the top part (phone) is heavier than the lower part (the Controller).

There are however some minor issues: first of all, when initally establishing the Bluetooth connection, I was unable to connect to the Gametel Controller using the prescribed method in the manual. I had to go the Bluetooth connection options of my phone and manually link the Controller to my phone to overcome this problem. Also, the buttons are quite small (smaller than for instance the NES or SNES gamepad buttons), so it happens that I push two buttons at the same time which results in undesired results. Another thing is sometimes the bluetooth connection repeatedly breaks up, which basically halts your gaming as you can no longer move your character. I think this is related to the battery of the Gametel Controller being almost empty, but I am not sure given that there is no way to see how much battery life you have left. Also, there is no charger included in your package, so you have to use your mobile phone charger. I found this quite annoying, because it happens that both your phone and your Gametel Controller are empty and thus, you have to charge them one after another. Given the high price (approx. 50 euros), I would have expected a charger included in the package as well. Lastly, I am not quite convinced of the build quality of the Gametel. It feels like a plastic toy and I am afraid it won't withstand more than a year of hard abuse. The clamp holding the phone seems to be the weakest link, as it is controlled by a simple spring. If this one snaps, you'll be left withouh means of connecting you phone to your Controller.

Desite these minor issues, the gamepad works almost flawlessly and is certainly a major improvement when compared to the virtual keypad of your phone. But 50 euros is too much, 25 would be more appropiate given the build quality and small flaws.

I brought this gametel gamepad the otherday..amazon delivered fast and well packaged.

as for the gamepad not so good ,i tryed over 60+ games and only 1 worked, so this gamepad doesnt work with every game for Android/iOS, buyer beware of buying this gamepad and hoping it will work with your games,

and seems all gameloft games dont work with this gamepad.

and the company who makes this gamepad, you cant seem to contact them

so have to give 1 star for this gamepad, not as good as many reviews make it out to be.

all in all a waste of money,

but i must say it works with many emulators like FPse, SNESdroid, GENdroid, MAME4droid.
