Review

If you like your thrillers with an added undertow of supernatural you can do no better. (The Pool)

Connolly creates complicated plots that never unravel. He's just that good. (Kirkus)

Once you start this book, make sure you've not got anything else important to do for the next few hours . . . The Charlie Parkerbooks have always been a gripping and enthralling read, but this latest one simply won't let you go. (ScifiBulletin)

Another chapter in the life of Charlie Parker and another fascinating read from the pen of the great John Connolly. Here is an author that seems to be totally in control of his writing and at the top of his game. (Shots)

A Game Of Ghosts is layered with such craft that it is almost a disappointment when things resolve themselves with relative quickness, as if you really don't wish to bid some of these characters behind. Even the most dangerous of them. Of course, in Charlie Parker's world, you never can be sure. (Irresistible Targets)

Praise for A TIME OF TORMENT: A TIME OF TORMENT is one of the writer's finest achievements . . . If you are a John Connolly or Charlie Parker fan, a recommendation for this one is unnecessary - you will be adding it to your bedside table. But, as the saying goes: new readers - start here. (Barry Forshaw Independent)

With A TIME OF TORMENT, the series sees possibly its strongest volume yet - if you weren't a fan of Parker before, you will be after reading this. (Mass Movement)

[The] Charlie Parker series . . . never fails to impress . . . it just keeps on getting better and better and increasingly haunting. What began as a particularly atmospheric series of books featuring a wounded character in search of redemption . . . has turned into a major literary triumph . . . Magical, horrific, poetic, gothic. (Maxim Jakubowski Lovereading)

In a consistently excellent series, A TIME OF TORMENT may be the best yet . . . a dizzying, yet assured, ride to hell and back . . . It is a testimony to Connolly's brilliance. (Sunday Herald)

Connolly provides plenty of tension and a genuinely creepy atmosphere that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next. (Crime Scene)

Connolly's prose is hypnotic and never lets you go. I am saddened that I will have to wait a while for the next book as Connolly is at the top of his form and has me completely hooked. An absolute must-read. (Shots)

Charlie Parker is one of my favourite fictional characters his series is excellent and this book carries on his torturous journey. The villains in this book are among the scariest Charlie has had to face so far, they took me back to my childhood when I used to frighten myself imagining monsters in the shadows of my bedroom. Without giving away the plot I did wonder for most of the book how Charlie could win this one. Those who have followed Mr Parkers journey will know he has been sorely injured in the past both physically and emotionally I just wonder how much longer can he continue to fight against the evil that's out there. Thankfully always has Angel and Louis to back him up. As an afterthought I would love to see a novella with Angel and Louis as the main characters maybe an explanation of how they met or how they met Charlie., I bet its an amazing tale.

Every year I wait for the next installment and I read the book in a short time as its just too good.
If you've got to book 15 you should've already read the previous 14 and understand the complexities surrounding Parker and his friends Angel and Louis.
This time he's been assigned to track down another PI who's gone missing. This brings him in contact with the Brethren and more mysteries. Parker has a long way to go and a lot more bad men to find and bring to justice but each book is a great read.

What can I say? John Connolly maintains his high standard and adds new wrinkles to the Charlie Parker mythos. I have been a fan since the first in the series and he never disappoints. I wont go into the plot but I will say that this is one of those where Parker does not have the central role and a lot goes on in parallel to him. As usual the bad guys are real bad and creepy (but some of them not quite so bad, just evil by association), Jennifer and Sam are quite prominent though Rachel's attitude seems to me unjustified (but then I'm a dad not a mum...). Angle and Louis play their usual central roles but the story does see the demise of one old "favorite".
As usual the tale raises more questions than it answers and leaves me on tenterhooks for the next installment

A typical John Connolly novel...well written, good characterisation and an excellent plot. This guy is my favourite author and reading this book has reminded me why that is the case....I'm now looking forward to his next release....

I love John Connolly's writing and this book is no exception hence five stars. But I would add that I found the story line meandering and perhaps not up to his usual standard - I always use "The Lovers" or "The Whisperers" as guides. When he's good he's very very good, he's never wholly bad but this one almost didn't keep my attention to the end. Shame about the final death, I really liked that guy!

Another fantastic piece of writing by John. Having read all of the Charlie Parker series, I eagerly awaited this instalment and, as usual found it be a gem.
Without ruining it (in case you have read it yet - what wrong with you?), the characters are developing nicely with a few more twists and turns in every single one of them's story arc!
I just can't wait for the next instalment so, please, John, hurry it up!

As ever we are left wanting more. Mortality and it's opposite run like rivers through this chapter of Parker's life. We learn more as we walk through the honeycomb world he inhabits. Read in one sitting, nothing more needs to be articulated, Parker is not verbose.

As ever once I pick up a Charlie Parker book, I cannot put it down. I love this series and have read through them several times. This latest one is just as good as the previous 14 and it seems Charlie, Angel, Louis and his daughter Sam are edging ever closer to a terrifying end game.....my one disappointment in this book ? One of my favourite recurring characters didn't make it.....anyone who reads the books will know who I mean...oh and I have to wait at least another 12 months before the next book 😢
