The main part of the kit is a pad of forty sheets of paper with a pre-printed design of a model. The plastic stencils are used to create fashions on sheets of patterned paper which are then cut out (scissors not supplied and embellished with pens (not provided) and stickers (extra glue really needed for these which is also not provided.)
It is frustrating for long term use as whilst there are plenty of clothes stencils, there isn't one to reproduce the model. However it is possible to scan a blank doll shape in and reprint it - you may want to remove one of the blank models from the pad and put it safely to one side so you can do this. The patterned sheets could also be scanned although this is quite a pricey option, given the cost of coloured inks.
Not everyone has access to a scanner and printer however, and surely it wouldn't have hurt to have included a model stencil?
It isn't really suitable for children younger than 7 as they won't have the fine motor skills needed to use scissors well for the delicate cutting out needed. The stencils can be re-used with ordinary paper but without the model stencil much of the appeal may have been lost.
The folder is sturdy enough to be re-purposed and may be the part of the kit that lasts long after the other parts have been discarded. The 11 year old who trialled this for me absolutely loves it, it has to be said, and went as far as getting some special glitter paper to use with the stencils. She got some great results and found it more satisfying to use than the shiny double-sided printed paper supplied.
This is great to entertain a solitary child for a few wet afternoons, particularly one who is in to fashion and takes care over what they do, the kit has enough detail for some very creative creations to be made.
There just isn't enough in the kit to keep two or more children happy for more than an hour or two, unless you can reproduce the doll and patterned sheets or buy your own papers.
The pack itself comes in a quality hardback case and the pink colours and artwork does suggest that it is squarely aimed at girls. For the money you get a good amount of entertainment that you can return too. The only issue is that whilst the clothing stencils can be reused on your own material and paper that is not in the pack, once you have finished the off the models, you will have to draw your own and this could be tricky. For the child you love fashion, this is a great gift to inspire them with new ideas.
all i can say is if you have a child that is very interested in fashion they will love this , it will keep them very happy and very occupied for a long time .
Once I started using it, I did find a few flaws. For one, the "model" images are not symmetric and there is nothing to mark out the "front" and "back" of the stencils, so it's very easy to make the mistake of carefully choosing a fabric, tracing your garment, and cutting it out only to find you have to use the reverse side which will be a completely different pattern. Very frustrating for a child, I'd expect, but easily remedied by using a permanent marker to label the front of the stencils. Also, the super glossy paper means the stencils tend to slide round while you are trying to draw. And the stickers are not very sticky and start to peel off almost immediately. I'd also like to have seen some pencils, pens or crayons included to encourage children to be a little more creative.
Negatives and girly stereotypes aside, this is great fun and mainly really well designed and executed, and any little girl with an interest in fashion will adore it.
It's not quite so impressive once opened, at least to my eyes, however my 7 year old loved it and instantly got busy with the included stencils and drawing outfits to go over the outline of the girl provided on the sheets. She enjoyed cutting out clothes using the patterned paper provided and also embellishing them more with the stickers. So it was a winning product for her and that's who it's aimed at hence the 4 stars. Great rainy day activity.
