Gothic Fiction Author and Poet, Paigan Stone began writing at 11 years old after reading her first adult fiction book, The Collector by John Fowles. "I'd never read anything like it. It was terrifying - but so exciting. . .that's when I realized I liked to be scared." Her love of Gothic Fiction began soon afterwards when she stayed up late one night with her sister to watch Christopher Lee in Dracula. Since then she's been a huge fan of Vampire movies and novels old and new. The youngest of seven children, Paigan struggled to find her own space and is a self-confessed bookworm. "I always have a book on the go. It's my time. Life wouldn't be the same if I couldn't chill sometimes with a good book. It's where I learn about life, long before I lived it."Married with a daughter Paigan is an English and Drama teacher in Lancashire. She's appeared in six anthologies for her poetry and short stories. Her recent success with her Vampire novel Gabriele Caccini -The Vampire Gene Book 1 has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Like all good author's she drew on her own knowledge and passions to write it. Paigan is currently working on the sequel Lucrezia -The Vampire Gene Book 2.

This is the first book in the planned Vampire Gene trilogy that is planned by author Paigan Stone. Gabriele Caccini is about the fictional nephew of Giulio Caccini (a real historical character - the man who effectively invented opera). Gabriele becomes a vampire after being seduced and bitten by Lucrezia, who then spurns him, leaving him to spend the rest of his life searching for a mate to share his immortality. The quest is unsuccesful and Gabriele has to re-invent himself each generation, killing hundreds of yourng women in the process - not altogether unwillingly.

The book picks up the story when Gabriele is a student in modern Manchester. There are realistic and erotic descriptions of his attempts to find his mate. Gabriele has been used to total control over his life and circumstances but that facade crumbles when he is drugged at a party and makes love to a girl who is very much not his usual type.

The story is very well told and the reader is presented with numerous flashbacks to Gabriele's early life in Medici Venice. The author has an impressive knowledge of vampire literature and tradition, and the book is also well-researched with the right amount of technical and historical detail to create a totally believable context for Gabriele's adventures and increasingly meditative search for an explanation for his very existence. There is also a dark and bloody episode in the New York vampire club scene.

Gabriele Caccini is well-written as ou would expect from an author with a MA in Creative Writing. It is an interesting examination of some old legends seen partially through the eyes of the vampire himself. Excellent book, what I like was the Vampire Gabriele revelled in the taking of blood and actually killed his victems.

Loved the snippets of his history over the centuries and can't wait for book two.

Worth getting your fangs into.

Re-released as Killing Kiss by Sam Stone soon.
