There was too many stilted words and rushed scenes for me to enjoy the end, Gabriel was so damaged there needed to be more detail of his feelings actually spoken because everything felt just that bit shallow and there lacked warmth from anyone outside the two main characters. Kyle was there but distant, I understand his method of not pushing, but there was no tenderness in what was said and without Cams family warmth there needed to be more tenderness elsewhere but there wasnt. I was left really let down by this as I was actually looking forward to a deep and tender story but didn't get either.
This one could be the biggest study in contrasts in the whole Texas series as it touches on both the extreme depravity of man and on the most pure of heart.
Gabriel is, like the angel he's named for, also a mixture, at once quite child like in his ways of dealing with things like emotions, in another so worldly wise that nothing which happens to him knocks him off his curve of feeling worthless.
It takes a special man to see beyond the broken shell and Cameron is just that guy, ironic as his eyesight has been degenerating since he was a child. He doesn't need his vision though to know there's something worth connecting with under Gabe's outward behaviour.
This is a beautiful story not of someone else saving Gabe but of Cam giving him the strong foundation to dig deep and find his own worthiness.
So. This is a rollercoaster ride of edge of the seat anxiety, angst, anger, violence, emotional turmoil and love. So much love. I wanted to kill Stefan myself, just sayin! Gabe and Cam have their own extremely different issues. Six is a wonderful secondary character and its always special to get a brief visit with the Campbell-Hayes family.
I found myself seriously choked up at times and smiling foolishly at others, there is so much happening here and if you can get the time and the quiet its a one sitting read.
I received this ARC promising and giving an honest review/opinion.
Gabriel is the second book in RJ's Legacy series. You can probably enjoy Gabriel without reading Kyle, first but I strongly suggest reading them in order. This series is a spin-off of RJ's popular Texas series. Most of that series was already published when I began reading her books and I haven't read it yet. I mention this because I want you to know that the Legacy series can be enjoyed without reading the Texas series. But, because I always prefer to read series in order, I do wish that I had read it first so I would have more background on the Double D Ranch and the characters from that series who make appearances in this spin-off.
The book's blurb is great and lets you know the important stuff about this story. What it doesn't say is how emotional this book will probably make you feel. Gabriel escaped from a horrible situation only to end up in a relationship with a very controlling person that isn't healthy. Cameron Stafford, while wealthy and owning and managing his own hotel, has issues with his controlling family. His father doesn't think he's capable of running the hotel just because he's nearly blind.
Cameron's family adds interesting elements to this book and I loved how the epilogue wrapped up a lot of the things that happened along the way to Gabriel and Cameron's HEA.
The way Gabriel and Cameron meet has kind of a Pretty Woman feel to it and I happen to love that movie. But this story has a lot more grit to it than Pretty Woman (a lot more sex, too, lol). I hope that Gabriel and Cameron will capture your heart like they did mine.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
