Product Description

Product Description

The WDR Sinfonieorchester and the Norwegian conductor Eivind Aadland continue their survey of Edvard Grieg s orchestral works with this selection from the composer s orchestral repertoire which he liked to conduct himself across Europe. Not all of Grieg s orchestral works were originally conceived as such. As he became increasingly famous as a composer and conductor, the Norwegian also arranged piano works which later became popular above all in their orchestral versions. Amongst these is the suite from his 'Lyric Pieces', Op. 54, to which belongs another single piece, the almost impressionist study, 'Bell Ringing'. The 'Old Norwegian Melody with Variations', Op. 51, originally a set of variations for two pianos, was also skilfully provided with orchestral colours, at the same time increasing the musical drama. The Concert Overture 'In Autumn', completed by the 22-year-old composer during a stay in Rome, creates an exception: it was apparently conceived from the outset as an orchestral work, but as initially published as a piano piece and orchestrated at a later stage. Amongst all these innovative works, the only 'original' ones are the three pieces from the incidental music to Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson s Norwegian play 'Sigurd Jorsalfar', of which the "Homage March" remains an obligatory item to the present day at coronations and festivities of the high nobility. Eivind Aadland was chief conductor and artistic director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra from 2003 until 2010 and has also worked with many other Scandinavian, European and international orchestras. Aadland initially studied the violin with Yehudi Menuhin. From 1981 until 1989 he was concert master of the Bergen Philharmonic and from 1987 until 1997 music director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra. He subsequently devoted himself fully to his conducting career and studied with Jorma Panula.

Review

Well worth the wait. The WDR Sinfonieorchester and the Norwegian conductor Eivind Aadland continue their survey of Edvard Grieg s orchestral works with this beautifully realised collection from the composer s orchestral repertoire, including such items as orchestrated selections from his piano suite Lyric Pieces . The Concert Overture In Autumn , written by the 22-year-old composer during a stay in Rome, is a remarkable achievement, a highly collectable series. --Barry Forshaw, cdchoice.co.uk 23 July 2013

EDITOR S CHOICE The first two discs in this Complete Symphonic Works series (10/11, 11/11) were outstanding. This third is wholly exceptional...A compulsively playable record, hugely recommended. --Mike Ashman, Gramophone September 2013

Performances of astonishing poise, intrepid character and enormous conviction stunningly well captured by the WDR microphones and guaranteed to make you fall in love all over again with this entrancing criminally underrated repertoire. It s a joyous treat- and no mistake! --Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone - December 2013

Audite's survey of Grieg's orchestral music with Eivind Aadland at the helm is going from strength to strength with each new release. The first two volumes contained much that is familiar: the 'Peer Gynt' suites and 'Symphonic Dances' on the début disc, and the popular 'Holberg Suite' providing the most substantial fare on its successor, which confines itself to music for string orchestra, in beautifully articulated performances and marvellous recorded sound. Those qualities are amply on display here too but much of the fare on offer on this latest release is - quite unjustly - less frequently heard and provides a welcome opportunity to hear the range of Grieg's seemingly ever-fresh creative gifts.

The early concert overture 'In Autumn' might not have the sophistication of the best of Grieg's mature output (the liner notes reference the influence of Schumann and Mendelssohn) but its melodic charm and the colourful and evocative orchestration certainly looks forward to the composer's later works. The opening, with rustic drones in the strings is particularly memorable, and within the overture's modest confines there is quite a variety of mood and incident (including a brief pre-echo, at around the five minute mark, of the "Stormy Evening on the Sea" that accompanies Peer Gynt's homecoming); it concludes with a coda based on an infectious Norwegian jumping-dance, which the orchestra dispatch with enthusiasm.

The performers provide the same sense of spirit in the lively grotesquerie of the 'Trolls' March' that concludes the four-movement 'Lyric Suite' Op.

An excellent series of CDs. If you like some of Grieg's orchestral music, you'll find lots of other pieces here that you've not heard before and you'll find many of them are delightful gems

HASH(0x9806c258) out of 5 stars Perhaps the most realistic recording ever made 8 Feb. 2015

This is perhaps the most realistic recording of a symphony orchestra I have ever heard. I was immediately struck by its vibrancy, accuracy, sense of space, tonality, dynamic range, and width and depth of soundstage. I have heard it in stereo and 5 channel surround. It is spectacular in either format.

The music is both energetic and pastoral by turns, easy to enjoy with its invigorating orchestrations and friendly harmonies. I own a few hundred SACD's and have owned even more. This might be the best. I sat down to listen for a few minutes, and, before I realized it, 70 plus minutes had gone by. I am not kidding when I say I applauded after the final note faded. I took it to a friend's house and he ordered his own copy after listening for 15 minutes.

If you have any intention of ever buying an SACD of classical music, let it be this one. There are not enough stars for the rating it deserves. If you know of a better recording, please leave a comment,
