so i did my research and found a solution that works for me:

rumour has it that these cards are produced in batches. for some people just installing the driver from [...]worked

for me it didn't. I tried the driver from Cal Digit and Sonnett as well without success.

The Multibeast method worked for me: Download Multibeast, double click to run the installer, look through the install options to find "Miscellaneous" then just tick the USB3 option and install then restart.

hey presto!

Some caveats...

It only supplies 500mA (usb3 specifies 900mA but this hasn't affected me)

Speed says up to 480MB per second but I do't think this is reported correctly.....( I compared a Lexar USB3 reader to my Sandisk FW800 card reader by downloading RAW files from a 16gb Compact flash card and it was IMPRESSIVELY faster than the FW800 reader!!!!)

It is very easy to accidentally pull the card out of the express card slot.

The two usb ports are very close together so you may not get 2 plugs in side by side.

Also my system auto detects the card if I remove and reinsert it. Some users report having to reboot or sleep and wake the laptop for the card to be recognised if it is reinserted.
I do not experience that behaviour, the cards mounts when I insert it. I never uninstalled the other drivers from my system so maybe one of those is allowing the card to mount? But thats just speculation on my part.

All I know is that for £7 I have 2x USB3 ports where once was just a useless hole :)

Update !! Dec 2014. The method above is still valid for OSX up to 10.9.5. However OSX 10.10 introduced a new set of security features which prevent the modified USB3 driver from loading properly.

Acceptable quality considering the price. Driver installation had to be done manually, but other than that, the device does everything it should do. Would have liked to have seen a slightly neater finish on the front of the device, but it's only a minor criticism.

For anyone wondering, on Windows 7, driver installation goes like:
>Put device in
>Go to device manager
>Find device (should be under "Other devices"
>Right click and "Update Driver Software"
>Select your disc drive with the driver CD in
>Windows will find the driver
>Now an unknown device should be in "Other devices"
>Right click that and "Update Driver Software"
>Windows will find the driver
>The device should now be ready to use

Hope this helps. These steps are probably applicable for other versions of Windows too.

Probably a bit mean of me to downgrade the rating as I think it is really designed for a pc but I use it in a 17" late 2011 MacBook Pro which doesn't have USB3 ports. The new ones do.

I do have another card (Caldigit) which works properly but is a bit bulky and isn't quite as quick as this one if/when this one works. The problem for me with this one is that the laptop doesn't recognise it immediately when you plug it in, or when you plug something into it. Despite having tried several drivers, the best I can do is to plug something into the card (which in my case is either a card reader for transferring digital pictures or a USB3 hard drive for doing backups) and then close the lid or put the laptop to sleep manually. Then wake it up and see if it picks up the card. If not, unplug the card and plug it in again to see if it recognises it then. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

It's such a hit and miss affair that its more trouble than it's worth, so I've stopped using it. When it does work, it's quick, but it's too flaky. By the time I've got it working, I would have downloaded all my images, or completed my backup anyway on the slower Caldigit card, so I'm sticking with that one.

As I said, probably a little unfair as I don't think they claim to work properly with a mac. But then I feel justified in giving it 3 stars because it damn well SHOULD work with a mac! The MacBook Pro is the best laptop in the world, I absolutely love it, and I wish and hope these guys will come up with a driver for us, which will open up a new market for them and will result in me immediately upping the review to 5 stars, as it is quick when it works.

Sure it is easy for it to pop out when you plug or unplug something whilst the card is slotted into the computer but you can overcome that by being careful, and if it is able to be popped straight back in and recognised again by the computer, then who cares, eh.

Excellent product, works with Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" out of the box. Works with Windows 7 after running the ASM1042 USB3.0 driver exe file provided on mini CD.

Product given 1 star only because zero stars is not an option. The one star is not warranted.

The USB3 card comes with both the card itself and a mini CD. Inserting the USB3 card into the laptop starts the driver install process. After a while, it asks you to insert the mini CD and press 'next'. After a very short while the installer returns a message to tell you that there are no compatible drivers on the CD.

The adaptor has a card in the package telling you to refer to "www.gmyle.com/help". Doing so draws a page with nothing on it (and it actually says so). Wandering around the web site gives you the firm impression that you are visiting a company that is in an entirely different product area completely. A search of the site fails to turn up anything to do with USB3 express cards or indeed any cards of any description.

I have tried to install this by manually loading drivers, pointing the install to web based drivers. I regard myself as reasonably computer savvy, but the complete absence of any user instructions must put off many people who can't get this thing working.

As an additional test, I installed a disc drive that just has a bare Windows Vista installation - no extra software, nothing likely to get in the way. It had exactly the same result.
This product is going back to the supplier as unfit for sale.
