Unfortunately there is a new pest - Jackdaws, one manages to hang on the loops underneath and pull the seed out while another 10 or so sit below to catch the windfall! I am trying various bits of wood to try and block them and still give the small birds access.
Many times I have watched them try and fail. Indeed their attempts provides a uniquely fascinating entertainment of it's own.
Having persistently failed to access the feeder direct they have completely given up on that approach and instead try to chew the plastic tubing above it, presumably in an attempt to break the whole thing apart. But such is the strength of the material that even after frequent and prolonged gnawing I can barely see any sign of teeth marks.
The squirrels did get lucky on one occasion - when the string I used to fix the hook to the branch snapped. This brought the feeder crashing down, allowing them a feeding frenzy. Needless to say I now use heavy duty twine instead. Fortunately the squirrels have yet to work out that this remains it's weakest link.
This one worked brilliantly for a while and we great displays of woodpeckers. The squirrels eventually worked out how to get to the cage with the peanuts in and eventually worked it loose. My daughter witnessed them running off into the woods with it and I havent seen it since!
One star knocked off for its length which means it hangs low to the ground or it needs to positioned very high up, which makes renewing its contents more difficult to carry out.
