It just didn't have the kind of information I was looking fore; it was to general. It was kind of boring, and seemed a little out of date.

The Future of Fonics: Spelling and Literacy
This is a knowlegeable and unbiased history of the controversy between the advocates of phonics and those of whole-language learning, from a Canadian perspective. Ms. Raven recounts how the old strictly disciplined ways of teaching were challenged by the exciting new gospel of child-directed learning. She discusses the basal readers it produced, how they were handled by different teachers, compromises, criticisms of the new way, and finally an emerging realization that if the spelling itself were revised, the stubborn problem of continnuing illiteracy would be eased. There is a chapter with literacy data, and a continual series of interesting anecdotal accounts from both classroom and special education teachers, including some of Ms. Raven's own experiences. She has tackled a confusing subject and done a good job of explaining it, for both laymen and experts. For researchers the ample bibliography is valuable in itself.
