Top Customer Reviews

Format: Audio CD
Most of the artists on this disc could not be described , with the possible exception of say Joe Henderson and Nat Adderley , of even approaching being household names. However the scorching jazz-funk grooves put forth here by the likes of Larry Willis, Walter Bishop and the like are simply superb. The compositions, even if a little obscure are uniformly excellent and the playing is absolutely beyond question. If you are not familiar with the genre then imagine the sort of sound track themes associated with '70's 'Blaxploitation' movies where the emphasis on fat bass lines, electric piano and plenty of percussion. Add in wah-wah guitar, plenty of horns and extended space for solos you have an idea for what is going on here. A brief list of the sidemen involved will indicate there are some serious players here- Mark Egan: bass, Steve Khan: guitar, Randy Brecker: trumpet,Al Foster/ Lennie White:drums to name but a few.

To add further to the value of this collection wonderful the recorded sound is vibrant and pulsing and the sleevenotes the product of a really knowledgeable fan.Lovers of dance music and serious jazz fans will find this set a revelation and a joy. Try out 'Out on the Coast' by Larry Willis and 'First Impressions' by Shamek Farrah for a taste of what is to come. Enjoy those tracks, you'll love the rest! Highly recommended.

A great compilation of less well covered Jazz-Fusion from the seventies, not all for the dance floor with some deep fusion from the likes of Shamek Farrah and Azar Lawrence.
