The explanations are generally good, although with some of the older OCR textbooks, some of the more detailed derivations are hard to follow.
Don't let that put you off though, the sheer volume of questions is enough to prepare any student extremely well for the exams. (Also, most of the derivations go beyond the course specification... And the explanations are the kinds of things you'll hope your teacher will go through anyway).

Contrary to what other reviewers have said, my whole further maths class and even my teacher agree that this book (further pure 1, I haven't done 2 or 3 yet) over-complicates quite a few topics. It's not always very well laid out and I guess it depends on what methods you use but even those are sometimes long winded and not explained properly. A lot of the examples just don't have clear steps and some of the questions are just irrelevant. bit shocking that this book as been endorsed by OCR really.

That being said, it does have a lot of good questions and some chapters are covered quite well. There also aren't any other OCR books that I've found except for maybe broad further pure books such as Further Pure Mathematics and Further Pure Mathematics but I haven't tried them out yet.

It looks slightly complicated if you flick through it having not done FP1 yet, but once u just go through in detail all the explanations and concepts it isn't as hard as you would think. The explanations are extremely helpful and not difficult to understand at all, in very significant contrast to wikipedia explanations for the exact same topics for example. All in all I would recommend this book very much as it provides great intuition and leverage if u haven't started yet like me or if you are not following in class and need something to refer to.

I bought it for and A-level examination. Pure 2 part was very helpful but Pure 3 was not really easy to understand.

The book is well written and fairly easy to follow. I used this when self teaching FP2 and FP3 and, as my primary learning resource, it was extremely useful. There are plenty of problems to attempt and answers at the back. I would recommend using online videos from Khan Academy in addition to this book as it helps to reinforce learnt material.

I am using this for teaching FP3, it's a very well written book unlike some others in the series I have found it very useful with plenty of examples to follow and for students to practice.

Good book. Introducing the idea of planes and the equations of planes I think could be scary for a person that has only just finished GCSE.
