This CD release contains the first and the second album of Funk Inc., the 1969 found, Indianapolis based funk jazz band which brought an easy, jazzy style to black "funky" music of that time. While today only few people would listen to 70's funk style this band and even more these two albums are still extremely listenable, more precisely, they are real big fun to listen to. Today's classification would easily categorize it as jazz lounge or acid jazz (because of the groovy hammond B3 sound to be heard here) but it's not that boring species of endlessly repeated sampled sound shreds with a superficial electronic two-step rhythm. It's absolutely spirited, vivid music moving your body and carrying you away when you were supposed to hang out on that boring after-work party doing small talk...

Buy it as long as it is available and have a look for some other black rhythm gems of that time like Idris Muhammad's 70's releases, too.

"Funk, Inc" and "Chicken Lickin'" are Funk Inc's first two albums from 1972. A little like The Meters, The Counts, Jimmy Smith or Dr Lonnie Smith, this is instrumental jazz funk that will get it's hooks in you and grow on you. Although just a five-piece band, almost every track has lots of choppy energy and funky rhythm, often with a jazzy sax or electric guitar solo layered over the top of a stabbing Hammond B3. It's not danceable like James Brown, but it makes you nod. There is something distinctive and haunting about this band's sound that keeps you coming back to listen to it again and again. Well worth buying this and their subsequent "Superfunk" album.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent 12 Mar. 2010

There is nothing flashy about Funk Inc's music, but that is intentional. When both Earth Wind and Fire and Funkadelic were at apex of 1970s style with sleek production and flamboyant costumes, Funk Inc were relatively old school--kind of a rocked up version of Jimmy Smith or Jimmy MaGriff soul jazz.

Which does not make this retrogressive for the 70s. This material, though cleanly produced and lacking in whas and other pyrotechnics, is uptempo and locks in with the drive of rock.

But as the name says this is funk 100%, and you will never regret buying Funk Inc.

I like the funk and "groove thang" that the group gets into. There are many so called "funkers" playing music today. However, this music is no "razz-ma-tazz." No confusion here about funk.
The name "Funk Incorporated" renders justice to the music---funk has been incorporated into this music. Funk on brothers.
