The STORMSHIELD laughs in the face of torrential rain, strong winds....It also makes other men feel inadequate as they look at their own umbrellas and realize their foolishness, how could they hope to compare? How could they be so wrong? The STORMSHIELD is bigger, the STORMSHIELD is better, the STORMSHIELD commands your respect. BUY THE STORMSHIELD NOW.
For the purpose of this Amazon review, when I went out in very windy/gusty weather I decided not to lean the umbrella into the wind like a shield which I would usually do as a safe method to protect the umbrella (which also takes extra energy) - but instead to keep the umbrella firmly upright.
I was walking along the canal for an hour, and the intermittent trees meant that wind whipped around from different directions and angles. The wind definitely would have turned most umbrellas inside out, but this Fulton model worked a treat venting the wind out. I had to grip with two hands a fair amount (this was very stormy wind, marked as red alert in other parts of the country) and there was sometimes some feeling of uplift as the wind tried to lift the umbrella up but it never felt beyond control.
The grip is nice enough, and the material hasn't ripped when I have brushed against twigs, holly and brambles (but this was very light brushes, I haven't put it to a real test - and although I was willing to risk the umbrella blowing inside out for this review, I'm not going to run around rubbing my umbrella on brambles for you guys).
The umbrella has slightly more weight than I would have liked (Fulton: If you make another umbrella that is £10 more expensive but same strength/design and lighter I will happily buy), but about the same weight as other golf umbrellas I have used in the past.
Only two complaints:
1) The rubber handle is too soft - it mark surfaces you lean it up against (e.g. walls) and combined with the length when closed that's a bit annoying if you keep your umbrella stand in the corner of your hall.
2) The collar that fits over the end of the spokes is totally useless - it simply pops off them as soon as you try to put it on.
This umbrella is an absolute beast, and having subjected it to the same stormy conditions I can thankfully report it showed no signs of even threatening to compromise its structure. It's a tad heavy, but the handle's got a fantastic grip so it's easy to keep hold of it.
The top is also wide enough to ensure you're well covered and your legs don't get wet (other than during the more ridiculous windy storms when the rain's nearly horizontal, in which case nothing can really help you).
There are a couple of things to bear in mind before ordering it, mind. Firstly, if you're planning on just using it for walking down the high street then bear in mind it's a big one and doesn't have a telescopic handle, so you'll need to be fine with walking about with it like a badass walking stick.
Secondly, since it's quite wide, if you're going to use it down the high street then be prepared for the odd occasion where you have to lift it high (or even temporarily fold it down) when you're walking through narrow areas.
That aside, this is a monster and comes highly recommended.
In practice, this Fulton performs impeccably. It provides a good shelter from driving rain and also has proved sturdy in everyday use. I've been out in some very severe weather with a Fulton Stormshield in the past and it more than lives up to its claims. The Storm vent doesn't eliminate the habit of the unit trying to blow away but its certainly a step in the right direction.
If I was going to moan in any way? Well maybe they shouldn't be so easy to lose. But that's more down to me of course.
Overall I'm VERY IMPRESSED indeed with my Stormshield and would thoroughly recommend it.
