Scan your documents at home, on the move or in the office
ScanSnap S1300i is a complete portable solution. Simply press one scanner button to convert colour or mono multi page, doubled sided documents into digital PDF files which you can file, organise, share and email. ScanSnap S1300i can be powered either directly from the laptop USB ports or via an AC adapter, making it ideal for business people on the move - in the car, in client's premises and so forth.
You need to scan different sized documents? Your paper sheet doesn't enter the scanner perfectly straight? You mistakenly entered your document upside down? You hate having to change the colour mode before each scan? You lose too much time removing blank pages after scanning? The ScanSnap S1300i makes you forget about these hurdles and provides files that are the exact replicates of your paper documents.
ScanSnap S1300i scans both sides of each page at up to 12 pages per minute directly to PDF, searchable PDF, JPEG, or to office applications like Word or Excel. The ScanSnap S1300i automatically recognizes the size of each document, detects and corrects for skew, and shows images in their proper orientation. You can even choose to have blank pages automatically removed.

The device connects via USB and has a very small external power supply. Setup on Windows 7 was as simple as installing the software from the CD and then connecting the device. The scanner itself is quite sturdy, and switches on when you lift the front cover up (which doubles as the feeder with a series of extending arms). It has a single blue button, which when pressed, starts scanning and fires up the ScanSnap Manager software - which sits in your system tray. I recommend configuring the manager software first - i.e. set the destination folder and filename (of which you can either choose a date/timestamp or an ever increasing number); set the compression, scan resolution and whether you want the images OCR'ed via the supplied AABBYY scanreader plugin to pdf, or written as a jpg.
The software feels quite dated, but lets you configure everything you need. I did have to tick the "Increase Contrast" as the text was looking a little grey - and I'll need to run the scans through Photoshop to further increase the contrast. It also seemed to ignore some of my settings until I restarted the scanner. I haven't tried the OCR capability yet so can't comment on it.
The scan quality looks very good, and there is zero bleedthrough on the double sided scans I'm making (the source paper feels like 90gsm). I wouldn't expect amazing results with photo's (even though the scanner does do colour scans up to 600dpi), however for documents it's perfect. For low res scans (150dpi) it is blisteringly fast; 8 or so seconds. For the higher resolutions (600dpi B&W) it takes around 25 seconds to scan both sides of a page.
As for the automatic sheetfeeder itself; it took me a little while to figure out the correct way to feed the paper to get the images coming out in the correct order with the datestamps (although it sometimes randomly rotates an image 180 degrees). I found that feeding the pages in ascending order but placing them upside down with the first side facing the table produced the correct file name order and image orientation. Now, the pages I'm scanning were removed from a spiral binder, so there's lots of those little rectangular punch holes which seem to catch on each other, so I've had to feed each sheet individually to prevent multiple pages being dragged through the scanner simultaneously. Once the first sheet has been taken, you can then drop the next sheet into place and it will continue to scan pages until you stop feeding it. I didn't find this a problem as I just got on with doing other things on my computer - you just need to remember to feed the next page in time. I tried the auto feeder, but because of the holes, it simply pulled a massive stack of pages through - on the plus side the scanner can handle pretty thick card stock (it has accepted 260gsm card stock with no problems at all). As with all auto-feeders, it really dependent on the quality and condition of the paper you are scanning - I tried it with a freshly laser printed document (approximately 20 double-sided pages) loaded into the feeder, and the scanner happily picked up each page separately; which is really impressive.
All in all, this scanner is worth every penny in terms of speed, reliability and time saved.
I already own the larger iX500, and the A1300i operates much the same, but no wireless (that is very limited on the iX500), and slower, and more portable. The only real drawback with these scanners is that they are not TWAIN compatible, but that said, with the use of a good PDF application, it makes little difference. Adobe is expensive and comes with the iX500, but not with the S1300i, but there are other good and much cheaper applications one can buy, such as NITRO. I will update this review when I have used this scanner, I have a lot to scan here, so it will be a good test. Official doc feeder capacity is 10 sheets, but I have read some have loaded 20 and it has worked fine. I will interested to see how well the feeder works.
I have now used the ScanSnap S1300i for a few weeks and can report that it is almost as good as the iX500, considering it's a simpler and smaller unit. It loses a star for two reasons, this unit should be USB 3.0 not USB 2.0 as it is. The iX500 is USB 3.0 and the transfer rate is way better, on what is a much faster machine in the first place. On higher resolution scans, it really slows down, whereas the iX500 sails through scans at all resolutions. In this day an age and in this price point, all USB devices should be USB 3.0, especially such as imaging equipment. The paper exiting design could be better to prevent backup of scanned docs, I sometime sit mine on something to increase the height so the doc drops away, but even then with such as heavier card stock (photos) they can catch the lip of the exit and back up.
Overall, the s1300i is a very good scanner, that streamlines document handling and archiving , when one needs a portable scanner. I don't understand why some complain that it is USB powered,as it comes with a mains power cable and power-supply, that works on 110v - 240v supply. The unit works faster on mains pwr supply, but if one is on the move and doesn't have a mains supply, the USB power would suffice for a few pages.
It's a shame that Amazon don't allow customers to rate their shipping as a separate rating as they do third party suppliers. It seems clear to me that they hold up the free shipping, they use to be very fast on all items regardless, and without a £20 minimum (It was £10 a year ago). I often take my business lease where, why wait to need £20 of goods when one can often get it faster elsewhere at as good or better price. Shame Newegg doesn't do business in GB.
