Building on the global success of the highly acclaimed FUJIFILM X-E1 – awarded 2013's Best Expert CSC by the Technical Image Press Association – the X-E2 takes image quality to a dynamic new level that is comparable with full-frame cameras. It delivers even more beautiful colour reproduction, higher definition image capture, and the world's fastest AF speed of 0.08 seconds**. Available in retro cool 2-tone silver and classic black.
Exceptional design and features
The X-E2's brilliant shutter speed is achieved by more than doubling the processing speed*** of the EXR Processor II. It is able to harness the information taken from over 100,000 phase detection pixels incorporated in the X-Trans CMOS II. The hybrid AF also combines phase detection AF and contrast AF to ensure accuracy when shooting low-contrast subjects and dark scenes.
The X-E2's 16.3 Megapixel APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS II Sensor incorporates an original colour filter array. This eliminates the need for an optical low pass filter that typically minimises moiré but does so at the expense of resolution. Instead, the X-Trans CMOS II sensor can capture unfiltered light from the lens for an unprecedented level of image clarity.
Quality is further improved by the Lens Modulation Optimiser (LMO). Its high-precision processing of the various lens parameters as well as data from the screen centre to the edges, corrects diffraction blur when shooting with a stopped down aperture and compensates for the slight blurring in the lens periphery. The result is edge-to-edge image quality with incredible sharpness. LMO is compatible with every XF lens.
The X-E2's prestigious feel continues with the combination of aperture ring on the lens and shutter dial on the top of the body as seen in its predecessor, allowing full shooting control while keeping your eye to the viewfinder. It allows the user to shoot and operate the camera without needing to look away from the viewfinder. Exposure compensation has been increased to the scope of ±3. Every X-E2 owner can also customise up to 4 buttons on the top and back of the camera to suit their own shooting style. The premium clear LCD monitor size has been increased to 3.0-inches but the body is thinner. It has a high viewing angle and 1.04 million dot reinforced glass. The scratch-resistant surface reduces reflections and improves visibility, making it easier to check image quality.
Fast and accurate focusing means you'll never miss a moment
Thanks to the X-E2's ultra-fast response you won't miss a single photo opportunity. In addition to achieving a world's fastest AF, the X-E2 has a rapid start up time (0.5 seconds****), virtually no shutter lag (0.05 seconds), and high-speed continuous shooting of 7.0 frames per second (up to 28 frames) *****.
Accurate and comfortable focusing comes courtesy of the hybrid AF. It combines a contrast AF that is strong in low light situations and a phase detection AF that's superb for capturing moving objects. With the improvement of the detection algorithm, it's easier than ever to focus on difficult low contrast subjects and horizontal striped patterns. The camera automatically switches between the two AF modes and focusing continues right up to the moment the shutter is pressed during continuous AF.
Prestigious sensor delivers brilliant image quality
Using the same X-Trans CMOS II sensor as the critically acclaimed X100S, the brilliant sensor technology controls moiré and false colour generation. By using an original colour filter array with a highly randomised pixel arrangement, the need for an Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF), known to degrade resolution, won't be necessary.
Image quality is further increased by the inclusion of the first Lens Modulation Optimiser for interchangeable lens cameras. The EXR Processor II image engine corrects even slight blur at the edges of the lens, as well as diffraction blur caused when narrowing the aperture. This great camera is able to maximise the resolving and individual imaging power of each lens. Ultimately, the sensor and engine combination achieves astonishing resolution, extends dynamic range, and reduces noise at high sensitivity levels.
Manual focus made easier with Digital Split Image Technology******
The user can achieve pin-sharp focusing by simply adjusting focus to line up the four stripes displayed in the central part of the live view and match the left and right split images. Focus Peak Highlight - the highlighting of the outline in high contrast areas of the subject during focusing – enables the user to achieve critically sharp shots.
Improved movie performance
The X-E2 shoots Full HD video up to 60fps (1920x1080) and the AF tracking performance in movie mode has been improved with good focusing speed, accuracy and smoothness. Quick tracking of the subject is possible in a variety of situations, such as when panning and zooming, or when the subject moves closer to or further from, the camera.
Wirelessly transfer your images
You can easily transfer images wirelessly from the X-E2 to your smartphone or tablet after installing the free FUJIFILM Camera Application app. There are no troublesome ID and password settings; just press the Wi-Fi button on top of the camera and then add the images directly to your blog or share them with friends on your social networking site. You can also use the X-E2's built-in Wi-Fi to save your photos to your PC.
Various modes to capture your creativity
By selecting from one of 10 variations you can shoot your images how you want them. Choose from Velvia to give beautifully vivid colours, ASTIA is suitable for portraits, PROVIA is a natural all-rounder, while the softer Pro Neg.Std, and sharper Pro Neg.Hi, are perfect for indoor portraiture. Sepia film simulation is also possible while creative black & white photography can be enjoyed using three different filter effects. Film simulation bracketing is also handy for generating three film styles from one shot. In addition, there are eight Advanced Filter options for extra creativity, including Toy Camera, Miniature, Dynamic Tone, Pop Color, Soft Focus, High Key, Low Key, and Partial Color.
Through the in-camera RAW development function, a RAW image can be converted to JPEG without a computer, while 14bit RAW capture enables RAW conversion with richer tonality. The built-in Super Intelligent Flash gives the right amount of light for the scene, while overexposure when using a flash for macro photography is also controlled.

My expectations were really high and, they have, in large, been met or exceeded. Compared to my X100, it has a better sensor, more modes, better manual focussing, is faster. The list goes on. Again, the camera feels great to hold and is amazing to look at (I've been accused of being a hipster, what cheek). The kit lens is really, really good (unlike every other kit lens that I've ever bought). I've also bought the 50-200mm and 27mm lenses, both excellent. I've really enjoyed this camera and have taken it out a lot and taken photographs in all sorts of situations. I continue to find new joys. To say that I really like this camera is an understatement. I sold the G3 and the lenses that I'd bought through Amazon
Two very minor points. I really like the X100's optical viewfinder, that's missing on the X E2. However the electronic viewfinder is really, really good. So, a bit of a downside, but very minor. The second grumble is the electronic split screen manual focussing. I've found few situations where I find it useful. I had imagined it would be like the old split-prism days, but sadly it isn't. Meanwhile, the manual and auto-focussing are both very fast and accurate under a wide range of light conditions.
Finally, Fujifilm update the firmware for their cameras regularly. It has made a huge difference to the X100, making it a better camera over time. One of the reasons that I bought the X E2 is because I like and expect this level of support.
I've given it a 5.
+ Image quality as good if not better that my old 7D.
+ So much more discreet than the 7D and less self conscious taking pictures in public.
+ Retro styling looks good.
+ Fabulous build quality
+ bright Electronic view finder
+ 18-55mm standard kit lens is exceptional (in contrast with the lit lens on my old 7D)
+ Several Software updates have added more features
+ the buttons and dials are tactile and well manufactured.
+ This is still pro-like serious amateur camera, complete control over manual settings, high end image quality and features.
- Not weatherproof (unlike my old 7D)
- Controls, settings and menus not so intuitive.
- Consumes the battery power quite quickly (buy 2-3 extra batteries for field trips)
- Not being able to have the setting for EVF only for taking pictures and the LCD display to review pictures, it either either or both.
- You may spend more money on comparative lenses than some other camera systems.
- Not the workhorse camera like the 7D, so I have missed those high frame rate 'sports pictures' (focus tracking etc) and maybe have been more worried about taking the camera out and about in more inclement weather.
First job after fitting all the parts together was to download the latest software upgrade which addresses a few of the remaining issues the X-E2. So the issues with slow focus etc are seemingly now passed into history. I have found that the quality of the viewfinder and the screen are hugely better than my old Olympus 'super-zoom' as it should be, given that the Olympus is well over 8 years old and the Fuji features all the advances in technology and optics that the intervening period has provided.
My first few shots were handheld at 1/30th second and the resultant pictures were a whole street of houses better than those I had managed previously. Most of my semi-professional work has been done at the Macro end of the focal plane and with a tripod, with the subject illuminated by natural light. To produce hand-held pictures of usable quality was a revelation and the start of a renewed journey into photography.
Enthusiasts compact it might be BUT for those looking for a camera system to grow with Fuji has provided the benchmark, yes it is expensive, yes it will take some learning but for those looking to advance their photographic eye this camera will give the best return for quality of end result over initial investment.
It feels quality. It is a joy to use.
It has so far taken some LOVELY photos (I also bought the 35 mm 1.4 lens to go with it - seems like a great lens).
It has some great photo options which I am enjoying playing with
I am so impressed with Fuji equipment that I am contemplating all the Pentax gear I have and then buying the possible new XT20 when it come with one of Fuji's excellent zoom lenses
So. Love it
