The FinePix SL1000 is ideal for people who don't want the hassle of changing lenses or the worry of getting dust on the sensor, but still want a powerful all-encompassing camera. Not only does it have an amazing 50x FUJINON optical zoom, but it can take terrific Full 1080i HD images and videos, and the Advanced Art Filters and 3D shooting are guaranteed to get your creative juices flowing. What's more, the zoom doesn't stop at 50x (1200mm*); with Intelligent Digital Zoom the focal length is effectively doubled to 100x (2400mm) with absolutely stunning results.
Long zoom and no wasted blurry images
The SL1000 incorporates a newly-developed 50× FUJINON optical zoom lens (24mm-1200mm*) with fast apertures and a powerful new Optical Image Stabilisation, to cut the effect of blurring at longer focal lengths. With 17 elements in 12 groups, the lens combines aspherical and ED elements for reduced imperfections and superior image quality. FUJINON's unique Super EBC coating technology is employed to reduce ghosting and flare for sharp results, with backlit subjects in challenging situations. Capable of super-macro photography at as close as 1cm, this is a camera that is flexible enough to be used in any situation.
Fast Auto Focus and speedy response
The SL1000 uses a 16 megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor with the ability to shoot at sensitivities as high as ISO 12800**, ensuring you capture high quality images, even in low light conditions. With autofocus speeds as fast as 0.2 seconds***, a start-up time of 0.9 seconds, and continuous shooting at 10 fps at full resolution (max 9 frames), the SL1000 ensures you'll never miss a shot.
Full HD Video with stereo sound
Thanks to the CMOS sensor, the SL1000 is capable of 1080i Full HD video capture at 60 frames per second, with stereo sound. Just press the dedicated video button on the back of the camera and you will be on your way to becoming your very own director; plus there are a number of advanced video-editing features to help you tweak the footage. Additionally, FUJIFILM's Scene Recognition technology works when recording videos and will recognise up to 6 types of scene, to make sure picture quality is always optimised. You can get even more creative and shoot an incredible 480fps**** for incredible slow motion capture.
Large 3inch tilting LCD screen
With its high-resolution (920K dot) Electronic Viewfinder, the SL1000 is perfect for helping you frame your subject in bright sunshine. Thanks to a handy eye sensor, the SL1000 is able to switch automatically to the EVF from the 3.0inch tilting (920K dot) screen, by sensing when your eye is close.
Ergonomically designed for ease-of-use
In addition to the standard zoom toggle controls on the top of the camera, there is a second zoom lever on the side of the lens barrel, allowing you to adjust the zoom range with your left hand, while your right index finger rests on the shutter button, ready to take the shot. Choose from three zoom speeds or use the Auto Return Zoom for long zoom photography. The mode dial makes choosing a shooting mode easy – P, S, A and M modes can be selected at the twist of a dial for sophisticated photographic techniques using manual exposure control.
Creative expression made easy
The Advanced Filter functions allow you to indulge your artistic expression in-camera. Users can choose from up to 8 different artistic effects:
- Pop Colour – emphasises contrast and colour saturation
- Toy Camera – creates shaded borders as if you were taking a photo on a toy camera
- Miniature – adds top and bottom blur for a diorama or miniature effect
- Partial Colour – captures a black and white image but retains one of 6 additional colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple)
- High Key – enhances brightness and reduces contrast to lighten tonal reproduction
- Cross screen (NEW) – creates starbursts around bright objects
- Soft Focus (NEW) – blur the focus of the image's edges to create a softer effect
In addition to these creative effects, the SL1000 offers Panoramic shooting just by pressing the shutter and spinning on the spot, whether the camera is in portrait or landscape orientation, the results are great. You can also create 3D shots by combining two separate shots, taken from slightly different angles for a fun effect. Additionally Instant Zoom shows your composition and includes a view of the area outside of the frame, letting you concentrate on composing the shot, without losing sight of the big picture.

My only complaints:
-the proximity sensor on the eyepiece is a bit tricky because it can be triggered by your body or hand and the lcd switches off to the eyepiece, which is kind of annoying ( you can select for the lcd to be always on and render the sensor inactive, which is exactly what I did).
-the sound of focusing is apparent in videos ,like in previous Fujifilm's models.
-Battery drains quickly especially if using the zoom, so you better have a couple of extra batteries at hand.
For its features (especially the 50x zoom) and price, this is definitely a bargain. Due to the small amount of noise at certain iso settings I would give this camera 4 stars, but because of the price it is offered and the features it has, I chose to give it 5. Overall I'm very pleased with it and very happy that I bought it!
So no regrets but only one piece of advise, when using full zoom tripod is a must but with the high resolution, cropping to fit is ok as quality is not lost.
Rather than post separate photos showing it's features, I have made one album to give an example of what this camera does and you be the judge.
The SL1000 is definitely a bridge camera and has an extraordinary range of functions; many of which I'm sure that I will never use. But if you are after a camera that you can use automatically in 'point-and-shoot' mode but also have an inclination from time-to-time to explore the more advanced and manual features normally reserved for DSLRs, then this should suit your requirements and at a reasonable price for the quality.
The pictures are sharp and stunning in auto but can be further enhanced by simply using any of the other modes and adjusting the settings; the results can be pre-screened before button press and thus the ideal picture can be framed.
The zoom is excellent but, be warned, zooming in to the full extent will require a tripod to hold the camera steady since image stabilisation doesn’t feature – the same applies to macro shots.
I have now had the camera a day and shot over 200 pictures. I’m extremely happy with the results and the ease of use. Do remember to download the full manual since the booklet provided only covers the basics.
This is not a compact camera and should be purchased as such. But if you’re after the functionality of a DSLR with a full auto function at an affordable price then you won’t go far wrong with the SL1000.
I'm not a camera buff at all, so easy even for me to understand. We had terrible weather with storms and I got some amazing pictures with it.
The zoom is amazing, I took a picture of a plane in the sky that was flying over Landsend, when I looked at it on the screen I was in shook as it was crystal clear, the smoke everything, the windows and even a bird which I could not see with my own eyes.
It's now like my best friend it goes everywhere with me, I wish I plucked up the courage to get one before now.
Still close up pictures are amazing, started off with food like you do lol the detail of tomatoes and cucumber, I was shocked, I mean who in their right mind photos a tomatoe and keeps it. Not the norm for your everyday photographer.
Now my dog I have got great shots of him running on the beach, detail and zoom in again. You can self teach yourself all sorts with this camera, people think I have been doing this for years. Need to get myself a tripod now weare coming into summer soon.
I am one happy happy person to have bought this camera.
