Designed especially for the X-Pro1 and X-E1, the FUJINON XF Lens series promises enhanced resolution and light volume in image edge areas as well as reduced chromatic aberration for exceptional image quality. Featuring an all-glass aspherical lens and other elements, the lens is polished to perfection and treated with a Super EBC coating. Holding the high-quality metal barrel and operating the precision-machined 1/3-step aperture ring is a sensation that fires the desire to capture every scene. For photographers who seek the peak of photographic excellence, FUJIFILM raises the curtain on a new era of interchangeable lenses and unveils a premium lineup of 3 single-focal length lenses.

High standards

With a fast F1.4 aperture, the 35mm XF lens (135 equivalent: 53mm) is perfect for low light shots. Featuring an all-glass aspherical lens and other elements, the lens is polished to perfection and treated with Super EBC coating while the high-quality metal barrel and precision-machined 1/3-step aperture ring gives versatile control. Excellent out-of-focus bokeh are achieved thanks to the design of the moulded aperture diaphragm blades. The blades are curved to create a circular image at all aperture settings, while the very edges of each blade are meticulously rounded off rather than simply cut off, which delivers a sharper image. Specifically designed to maximise the mirrorless design of the body the X Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm giving high resolution right across the image.

I bought this lens to use on my XE1.

The lens is presented in a really nice box that makes the experience of the arrival and opening of the lens a real pleasure. The lens itself does not diminish this initial pleasure either; metal construction yet light weight. - it is one of the nicest lenses I have held; it is beautifully made.

I have read some reviews online about the horrible lens hood; however, I really like it - it is made of metal and locks in place tightly, I keep it on all the time and I use the supplied rubber cover, rather than the lens cap, to protect the lens when not in use.

Some online reviews describe poor focusing speed and while the lens does not focus as snappily as my Nikon lenses on my D700, but it's not slow either; place your focus point where there is some contrast and it locks on without problems.

The results this lens produces are superb, even though it can't produce the shallow depth of field of an equivalent lens on full frame, the lens is so sharp you still get the 3D look in your images because the subject is so well defined from the background.

I can't think of a negative point about this lens - highly recommended.

The online reviews that contain test charts indicate that the edges/corners are quite poor when the lens is at its wider apertures. That may be true when you photograph test charts at a distance of one meter or less. I can see from using the lens that it was clearly not designed for closeup photography - it will be rather soft and with lower contrast in such situations. But this disappears completely when it focuses on objects about couple of meters away and then it is tack sharp across the frame straight from f1.4, with only a hint of softness/vignetting in the extreme corners. So at the end of the day you will struggle to find a 50mm equivalent lens that performs as well as this one does. Interested in closeup photography? You should definitely invest in a dedicated macro lens, the 60mm.

Yes, wonderful performance from this lens but I'm sorry I bought it. Why? Well, I already have the "standard" Fujinon XF18-55mm zoom and the performance improvement from the 35mm prime lens is negligible. Note, that's not because the 35mm is bad, anything but, it's just that the 18-55mm is so good that you'll really be hard pressed to see an image quality difference. "Aha", you say, "but I can open it up to F1.4 which is at least a stop better than the widest the zoom can do". True, but the prime doesn't have image stabilisation but the zoom does. I think the IS on the zoom is good for 2+ stops, so the ONLY reason I use the 35mm prime is for when I want to open it right up for a narrow DoF (which I do ... sometimes). If I'm shooting in low light I stick with the 18-55mm

So, a truly great lens (if too damn noisy when focusing for video use), but before you buy, ask yourself how many times you will take off the standard zoom and use it. (Yes, I know, you're going to buy it anyway because you want to)

This was my first lens I decided to buy with my Fuji X-T1 and I absolutely love it!
I'm not a professional photographer but consider myself an enthusiast. For my mere requirements, I couldn't find any flows with this lens yet.

This is a wonderful lens. I recently made the move from a Canon 7d to X PRO 1, and wanted this lens as a replacement for my Canon 50mm 1.4.

I really loved the Canon 50mm, but this lens surpasses it. It's small, yet feels very solid, the image quality is superb and it produces superb portraits with fantastic detail and lovely bokeh.

I also have the 18-55 and 14mm (which are also excellent), but they don't get a look in as this never leaves my camera. Love it.

I use this lens with an XE-2. My previous camera was a Nikon D90 which I mainly used with a Nikon 35mm F2. The first thing you notice is the exceptional build quality of this all metal lens. When I attached it to my camera it required a firmware update, this is a result of Fuji's commendable commitment to continuously improve their existing products. Once updated it has barely been off my camera. The main thing that you notice about this lens in use is that it does exactly what you expect. It is sharp with fairly quick focussing, has easy aperture control, renders out of focus areas nicely and seems to completely remove lens flare. In short it just delivers quality time and time again. As for areas of improvement, it would have been nice to have image stabilisation but I hope at some point Fuji will deliver this in camera with a next generation body. It takes a 52mm filter which is worth buying as the front lens element is quite exposed.

This is a fine lens and certainly up there with the best I own for image quality. Sure a little soft in the corners at f1.4, but not a concern really. Centre performance is just fantastic at all apertures. Personally I have no complaints about the focusing speed or noise - It's not the fastest, but good enough for most shots. The manual focusing ring is silk smooth with just the right feel but the aperture ring could have a little more resistance as it is easily moved - just keep an eye on your setting in the viewfinder.
The hood and hood cap - Well, I have left them in the box. The rubber cap is just asking to be lost and the hood can't be reversed so is difficult to carry and prevents the actual lens cap from being used - What's wrong with a "normal" hood? Also, should you lose the hood and cap, a replacement from Fuji will cost your £50.
This lens is easily worth the full asking price, and with the Fuji Cashback offer at the moment is a complete no-brainer.
