I was eagerly looking forward to reading this title, after all the author was present, and was an eyewitness to many of the events unfolding during the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. His manuscript contains adequate detail but I was expecting a more revelatory journey from someone who had the opportunity to experience the Hitler phenomenon first hand. Though opposed politically to the ethic of National Socialism, the author cannot hide his sense of "marvel" when confronting the issue of Hitler's mass appeal to a growing number of the populace. You should read this book in the knowledge that the author was writing in exile in America having fled to this country from Germany, but he at least restrains himself from writing in a "sensationalist" manner regarding his subject matter, and I guess for the time period (the 1940's), this book can be seen has a comprehensive view into the rise of Hitler and his Party.

Excellent biography written by someone who was a witness to the rise of the evil man and his regime. Having read many of the acknowledged biographies, Bullock, Trevor-Roper, Kershaw etc, I am impressed at how much this "original" biography continues to inform and illuminate Hitler's personality and the rise of his gang. Essential reading for any student of the Third Reich, the rise of the Nazis and the personality of Hitler.

One of the best sources available on Hitler. He observed the Nazis first hand from 1920 till 1944. His research is superb. Much of the book was written while he was living in France after being forced to flee Germany.

Konrad Heiden was a newspaper man who knew and covered Hitler from the early days of his, Hitler's, career, circa 1920s. This study of the man who would be "Fuehrer" - published ca, 1944 - is the biography other biographers of Hitler consult when preparing their own works. Heiden was not a "follower" of National Socialist philosophy, and his less than favorable reports on the tactics of early "Nazi" activities led to Heiden's eventually fleeing Germany for his life. A must read for those seeking to "explain" Hitler...
