Product description

Amazon.co.uk

Founded in 1975, Front Line Records was Richard Branson's attempt to emulate the success of Island Records. Unperturbed by the fact that Island already had the grail of reggae artists in Bob Marley, Front Line managed to amass an impressive roster of artists, including The Gladiators, Culture, Gregory Isaacs, U Roy, Prince Far I, Big Youth, Sly Dunbar and Althea & Donna. This 4-CD, 86-track collection was put together to commemorate a quarter of a century of the finest reggae around, and as such contains some truly great tracks, divided into four loose categories - "Roots & Reality", "Love & Harmony", "Dangerous Dee-Jays" and "Dub Encounters". There are so many outstanding tracks that it's hard to single any out for particular praise, but special mentions have to go to the skanking beats of Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking", the up-tempo dancehall of Culture's "Too Long in Slavery", the delicious dub of Sly Dunbar's "Dirty Harry" and the horns and toasting of Big Youth's "Marcus Garvey". For anyone even slightly interested in reggae, this is an essential purchase, be it as a great starting point or an essential addition. It's a fitting testament to a fantastic 25 years. --Helen Marquis
