This special effects-laden horror comedy from Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson faired badly at the box office upon release, which is rather surprising given that it has so much to offer. Michael J Fox plays a psychic investigator who can actually see ghosts, and lives with a trio of spirits who scare people to promote Fox's ghost-busting business. In a town infamous for serial killings, a new series of deaths prompts Fox to induce his own out-of-body experience so he can battle death in a spirit-plagued netherworld where evil reigns supreme--or something like that. So much happens in this chaotic film that you might feel like you're watching several movies at once--a slasher pic, a supernatural thriller, and a black comedy all rolled into one non-stop showcase for grisly makeup and a dozen varieties of special effects. The Frighteners is an odd but wildly inventive film, one that doesn't set the world alight but is nonetheless worth a look. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the Blu-ray edition.

I went to see this movie in the theater when I was about sixteen years old, and I had a really good time watching this back then and it's still lots of fun to watch now! It's dark, scary, funny and weird at the same time (not being a bad combination!) and keeps a good pace throughout the entire movie. The actors do a really good job at drawing you into the story. Also, the special effects are very nice and don't come over as being completely out-dated at all. If you like Peter Jackson's quirky style of movie-making, you will certainly appreciate this movie!
This was an early Peter Jackson film, made in New Zealand, and on a budget. But it works. It comes together in such a way that the main characters are flawed, but likeable.
If you want a scary film that has some humour, and some black humour weaved in, you should love this film.
In this typically werid Peter Jackson (braindead, LOTR) directed movie gem, MJF's character is a hung up guy who can see ghosts. He has set up a business as a ghost remover and uses a trio of ghouls to do his work.
but when a series of brutual killing starts up in the already killer-happy town, MJF soon finds that he's services must be used to hunt down and destroy the serial killer.
A great movie for anyone who wants a horror laugh.
