This book was part of a module I am currently studying as part of my English degree. When I asked my lecturer why this book was on the course, he told me "not because it is good" which 100% have to agree with, unfortunately. I found the storylines both blown out of proportion to the point of being unable to empathise, sympathise or respond at all to the characters. I found the language rather unsophisticated and the writing style very unenjoyable. Of course, this is down to personal preference - but I prefer my fiction a bit more well crafted and magical, rather than daft and full of fake hormones.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about 3 school friends, Cerys, Lois and Hywel who go to the University of Aberysthwyth and what befalls them during their first year. I liked the way the author told the story from each of the character's viewpoints. The writing was fast paced and was full of twists and turns. I read this in one sitting and really enjoyed it. It was fresh and original. The characters were believable and the story invoked many memories of my first year at University.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to read more of the author's work in the future.

Don't even bother with this book. At times I wondered if Joanna Davies even actually went to uni. The writing is poor and her depiction of student life is beyond far fetched. The three main characters are unbelievable and unlikeable. Just not an enjoyable or interesting read.

Cliches all over the place, very basic amateur writing style with a lot of mistakes and inconsistencies.

Three characters who you couldn't really care less about. The plot was full of things happening but they were random as hell and the characters' motivations unlikely, and their actions not in keeping with their cookie-cutter stereotypes. No real sense of place either, a shame as Aber is lovely.

Badly written waste of time. I'm not sure why I finished it; boredom and fascination to see what horrors would be next and mild interest because I study at Aber. Would it have been better in the Welsh? I doubt it.

I picked this book at random from the library. When i first started reading it i had to check i hadn't accidentally got it from the teen fiction section, but as it progressed and the characters developed and the sex, drugs and rock and roll started i realised it was definitely for grown ups! I found i could identify with the characters feelings about starting uni, and it was a very easy fast moving read, but i came away thinking "as if" , it was a bit soap opera-ish in terms of how much was crammed into one academic year, like a Welsh episode of Hollyoaks. Fun though.

This novel is a great read. Told from the points of view of three very different protagonists, the story is constantly moving forward. The writing style is concise and witty, and often close to the bone. Without giving anything away, the fun and games soon turn sour, with a gripping climax. I'd agree with another reviewer who said it would make a great film! I'd also disagree with another reviewer who criticised the characterisation of Hywel - he was my favourite character, who has a definite 'rites of passage' storyline. Buy this book for anyone going off to university in September (but maybe not for their parents!)

As a graduate of Aberystwyth University I was very disappointed with this book. I didn't feel there was any real sense of place and you got no idea of what it was actually like to be a fresher at university. The narrative style, with the three points of view was good, but the characterisation, particularly of Hywel and the minor characters was weak. Over all there was no real sense of what university life is like. The dilemmas faced by the three narrators were fundamentally those of any young people moving away from home and getting in with a crowd of apparently more worldly contemporaries.

I've read the novel in both languages and loved them, and the new stories added to the English medium book was a really nice surprise! I found it easy to read as there's a lovely flow to Joanna Davies' writing, so much so that I raced through it without realising. I'd honestly recommend both versions to anyone! Enjoy!
