This is an outstanding account of the relationship between the game of rugby and French politics and society over more than 100 years. Anybody who is interested in 'la France profonde' and/or rugby will want to read this penetrating survey of an extraordinary phenomenon. It is unusually well written for an academic study and yet has all the expected apparatus.
Bought this some months back and never left my thoughts. It's an excellent reader covering the long history of rugby in France. I'm a fan of rugby and a huge fan of French rugby but, despite being a keen reader, I'd normally not give a sports book much thought. However, this is just the kind of book a sports book should be; well researched, interesting and informative, wide ranging and thought provoking. It helped me understand why it is the French game of rugby that draws me in more than the game as played by other nations. Allez!
