I found this pack useful for the beginning of a french course. You can't listen to the CDs in the car though, you need to have the book in front of you, which I found frustrating. I wanted to listen on the way to work, so ended up getting free Podcasts to listen to - they were better than the CDs in this pack. Having said that, the book guides you through lots of different sections, such as food and travel, and the CDs have exercises on each section. In the book, there are transcripts of the CD interviews as well as paper based exercises and additional info like background details of France - although there are not many of these. The most useful thing I found about this course was the boxes in each section of the book called 'Info Langue' and 'Mot a Mot' and the verb info. I am now 3 months into leanring French and I need a more detailed book than this but it has defeinately really helped me.

I have been studying French now for around six months and originally bought this to suplement the 1 hour a week French Class. I don't find it that great as a course in french. Basically it does not go into the language in enough depth, its OK as background and a supplement but you very quickly need verb tables and a broader text book if you are serious about the language. The CDs are useful as they are recorded interviews with French people so provide useful listening opportunities.

I was attracted to buy this pack because of the excellent Spanish language pack (SUENOS) published by the BBC. To my disappointment, I find the French Experience pack not very useful for beginners! It doesn't explain much about the sentences and use of phrases. It is also hard to follow the audio tracks. The Spanish pack contains many interesting facts about the Spanish-speaking world but this is not the case in the French Experience pack.

First it was not totally clear in the promo blurb that the Activity Book is not included in the pack and has to be bought separately. One just gets the CDs and course book. We are working through this course on the recommendation of our tutor, so it's rather early to give a rounded review. However it starts easily with basic greetings and then moves gradually to more complex situations within which it nicely introduces French grammar. But, several annoying features have already emerged: the text could be more accessible to people who are visually impaired (this has to do with point size and use of colours); some of the acted situations seem inane. The most difficult or is it confusing issue for me is the lack of correspondence between the numbering of situations or scripts in the course text and the numbering of the spoken CD tracks to which one is meant to listen. This means there is much jumping between course book and CD player or computer that wastes a lot of time. This could have been sorted out given that there's been a new edition since 2002 and it's up to its 14th impression. Having said all that I'm enjoying trying to learn French again for the umpteenth time. When I've finished and actually learnt French this time round, may be I'll give it five stars.

I found the course great as it's situation based and gives you useful phrases that you can use very early in your learning. It's a useful supplement to a formal classroom grammar course (like Alliance Francais) as it teaches listening and talking.

If you are looking for a beginners introduction to French, then the book is great. You really do need the CD's to go with it to make it usable though.

Topic areas covered are good and my evening class format was based around the book sections.

However, although the title declares "New Edition", it still speaks about Casette tapes in the introduction and has not been revised for some years, so although has concepts such as surfing the web, is poor on anything more specific.

I'm taking a University short course and this textbook is required reading. I would strongly recommend buying the audio CD's that accompany it as you need to hear the language as much as possible and much of the book involves exercises from the CD's.

I previously bought this product a few years ago and was very impressed with it. I decided to brush up on my french again but couldn't find my original, so purchased the updated version. I haven't used it as yet but it should be as good as the original.
