I was slightly disappointed that this book is more about up-market style than authentic French country homes, which is what I was looking for. To quote the inside sleeve,
"French Country Style at Home invites readers to cross the thresholds of twenty three rural homes where contemporary comfort blends with vintage flair. A renovated mill in Brittany, now a family retreat with fresh white wood and stone floors, features a medley of gently-worn antiques: a Parisian streetlight finds new life in an airy entrance way: a grocery store scale recalls the simple days before the bustle of supermarkets. Further south, an intimate guesthouse welcomes visitors inside its medieval walls where fine linens in shades of grey and mauve soften stone surfaces and wooden beams. An organic bed-and-breakfast nestled in western France combines contemporary sensibilities with traditional country living. Great care was taken in renovating this seventeenth-century family home using local materials and environmentally-conscious techniques; the result is a warm and vibrant paradise celebrating country style".
In fact most of the featured homes are guesthouses or sell antiques and bric-a-brac rather than being typical French homes. It's the opposite of my other book on French country homes, entitled Really Rural: Authentic French Country Interiors: Authentic French Country Style, by Marie-France Boyer, which a number of reviewers thought exploited the poverty of the occupants. I was hoping for something between the two, but maybe Marie-Frances book IS more representative of the reality of the old rural homes in France where the English love of "shabby-chic" is regarded with amusement and incomprehension and the aspiration is for what is modern?

HASH(0x9d9c2090) out of 5 stars Country french design to inspire 9 May 2010
By L. M. Keefer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
For those of us who can't get enough of french country style--and the volcanic ash in Iceland is keeping us from traveling to the french countryside--this book is a wonderfully economic avenue to soaking up some french country design and scenery. It's a bit of a design travelogue, taking us into country residences whether they be french farmhouses, cottages or castles. You learn a bit about the owners and how they combine french antique country pieces sometimes with contemporary flair to create livable design. What I love about this book is the authenticity--it's not a foreign take on french country design. It's an illustration of how the design is used currently in authentic French homes owned by people who love design.

You'll see inviting design vignettes and accessories to give you ideas on how to use this loved style in your own home. The book is a charming read, and you'll feel like you traveled with the author to visit his favorite design friends in their original homes in the french countryside. It's a fun book to just pick up, read and look at the pictures--you'll feel like you visited rural France for an hour with a knowledgeable French design guide. Perfect for your design library, or a side table or guest room for a quick visual get-away to the homes in France's rural countryside.

HASH(0x9ddd1c18) out of 5 stars Superb cottages to stay 21 Sept. 2010

I love all the beautifull places to stay they recomend. A book to rememeber, specially when you plan to travel to France and maybe this time avoid Paris. The books itself was exactly what I want, good mixture between a road guide ( telephones and addresses included) and a designers one. You go hand by hand restoring each house and redescovering its original spirit. Somehow it looks like Doc Martin's village but in the south of France near Germany. It will go perefectly with a road guide and the right company. The exact places where you can feel life in the country, wth real milk, plenty of air and green.

HASH(0x9d8508c4) out of 5 stars Beautiful but a ridiculous price 18 April 2012
By Francoise Beniston - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Everything that has been written previously about this book is true. However, you can buy it from amazon France (amazon.fr) for under 40 euros or from Powells.com for under $35.00. I have pointed this to amazon.com and they still maintain this absurd price. Please note that used book sellers have followed suit by inflating their prices as well. It is charming and worth the $35.00 if you are, like me, addicted to "deco porn". If not, give it a pass.

I love my book and especially the low price I found it through an Amazon seller :) I am only through 25% of it and already know it will be close at hand to browse through for quite a while.
