This year it is my turn within our Lodge to provide a toast to the visitors each month. Having proposed a few toasts previously, I am not afraid of speaking, however, what I am lacking is ideas for content! I purchased this book hoping that it would provide me with ideas to use in my speeches. Yasha Beresiner has an outstanding reputation within Masonic circles, and the book's description seemed to fit my requirements perfectly.

Having read it however, I am very disappointed. There is only one specific toast to the visitors, and that speech itself is mainly comprised of jokes I have heard a dozen times already in festive boards. One joke was even used in a TV commercial so I'm pretty sure everyone's heard it already.

In our Province (in the North of England), there seems to be a migration away from joke-telling to more heartfelt speeches, which generally seem well-received. My intention was to gather material and subjects that I could structure speeches around to our visitors. On reading the rest of the book hoping for titbits I could use, the other speeches are so focused on the subject matter that they really can't be worked elsewhere.

I'll probably look at this book again in the future for inspiration when I have to give other toasts. For now however, I am still short of ideas to use over the next twelve months...

The Handbook is especially useful to senior masons who are frequently engaged in speaking at meetings. It has to date since my purchase assisted me to deliver a few excellent speeches. However one must bear in mind that the content of each section should be modified according to a Masons local context and preferably supplemented by additional local material to give it its full value at masonic speaking.I would highly recommend it a a quick guide to setting up the structure of a quick 4 -5 minute response at any sort of regular Masonic meeting

wording needs updating, these toasts are so overused, most Brothers can pre-empt what is coming next., please let us have an up dated version
