Susie Kearley's Freelance Writing on Health, Food and Gardens is an eye-opener to writers who may previously have ignored these three markets. Through using examples of her own work and ideas, Susie suggests how to adapt and twist your ideas to fit these markets, demonstrating that you don't need to be a celebrity to produce work for these titles. It's written in an easy-to-digest style, her inspiration will soon have you blossoming with ideas to improve the health of your bank balance, through increased sales ;-)

Do undertake the exercises at the end of each chapter, for they help to consolidate what you've learned so far.

Read it once. Then read it again, only slowly this time. What I like about this book is that it's structured and practical, as a 'how to' book should be, yet at the same time engaging and accessible - an easy read if you like. Susie gives you all the tools you need to follow in her footsteps, and illustrates her points with examples from her own experiences, both good and bad. It's down to the reader to add the kind of focus and determination that Susie clearly has, and that makes the difference in this field between a winner and a 'might have been'. Don't be put off by the title simply because health, food and gardens might not be your particular interests. Most of the advice in here is relevant whatever your topic.

As a nurse and ex-horticulturalist now working as a freelance writer this book appealed to me as it's an area of writing I'd like to break into. The book contains some really good ideas especially on how to take one idea and adapt it to different markets and hence sell more articles. Susie shares her experiences and gives valuable advice, and her book will be of interest to established as well as new writers.

This is a great book for anyone wanting to make a career in freelance writing. I found the advice highly relevant even though I am working in a different area of expertise - all the hints and tips are transferable between markets. I particularly appreciated the very practical focus of the book, including the example pitches and myth-busting chapter! I will definitely be recommending this book to others.

Beginning a career in freelance writing can be overwhelming - so many different topics and publications. This book is full of clear, practical advice that really helped me to focus on what I wanted to achieve and how I should go about it. Although specifically about health, food and gardens, the advice applies to any field of freelance writing. A great book for any would-be freelance writers.
