I adore this classic short story. It packs more into a few pages that many longer books. It speaks to men now emasculated by their role in life, but who secretly dream of being the hero.
Brilliant!

I had always wondered what it was all about. People use the term Walter Mitty when they want to describe someone who thinks he is someone different to the reality of what and who he is. Yes, now I understand but the personality change is not Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde it is more in the daydreaming that is something that most of us do in some way. In this it is quite clever as it draws attention to our own faults and reveals a side of human nature that we may not have noticed.

I first read Walter Mitty decades ago, way back in the '40s, when I was a young, frivolous thing, and well-nigh crippled myself laughing. Recently the grandchildren were discussing the film, and I was reminded of the book, and downloaded it. It is actually funnier now than it was back then, and again I nearly did myself an injury laughing (out loud, which doesn't often happen).

Although I enjoyed the film of the same name, I was frustrated that it brought back no memories of the short story I had read many years ago. Now that I have reread it, I realise what a fantastic example it is of what can be achieved in a short story-as close to perfection as a reader is likely to get-highly recommended and utterly timeless.

With two film versions of this knocking around I wanted to see what the actual story was. Excellent, and I can see why it inspired the two movie versions as it's not a film in itself. Worth a read though as it is a classic, and there's a Mitty in all of us at some time in our lives. Pocketa-Pocketa-Pocketa…

there is something deceptive about this book: it's title. Only 5 of the 112 pages is actually the story of Walter Mitty. This is a book of short stories and therefore a little difficult to describe. But I will try.

James Thurber looks at some really interesting parts of human existence: our strange phrases, the odd thoughts that might pass through our minds, the stuff we tell each other about our days, and our darkest thoughts at the worse times in life. To call this dark comedy is perhaps too simple a category, but it is comedic in parts and I would recommend it, particularly to those who might take inspiration and make millions like those in Hollywood already have.

Admittedly, I bought The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber because I was intrigued by the movie. I subsequently forgot about the book purchase and also the film. Now, nearly two years after I bought it I decided to read it.

It is a sweet story of a man who could have been brilliant but never got the chance to be and lives in his fantasies whether that be as a lawyer, fighter pilot or doctor. It has the overriding message of don’t take life for granted; live everyday to the fullest and be the best you that you can be.

You can see why they took the premise of this story and turned it into a film. The short story does leave potential for growth and development.

It is a simple but sweet story about achieving ones potential.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber is available now.

This was a very quick but interesting story, the story proves you can never fully know someone, especially if they have a secret life!
The author done a wonderful job of bringing daydreams to reality, I truly felt I was right in the action and then a few seconds later I would realise it's all the beautiful work of our imagination.
