If you say the name 'Frank Lampard' to someone, they are unlikely to immediately think 'author'. Son of West Ham United legend Frank Lampard Sr, Frank is best known as one of the most successful footballers in the country- an England international and Chelsea hero. But Frank has another passion-promoting children's literacy. He has written the Frankie's Magic Football series to appeal to both boys and girls.

Frankie vs the Pirate Pillagers is the first book in the series. It begins with Frankie and his friends enjoying a trip to the funfair. They come across a football stall and Frankie decides to have a shot in the hope of winning a prize. Nobody expects him to be successful, least of all the stallholder who hadn't even got a prize to give! The tatty old football is all he has to give, and Frankie accepts, unaware of the magic power of the battered ball. The friends head home for a kick-about and suddenly find themselves whirling through a magical space. Before they know it they are aboard a pirate ship, and are expected to play a match against a team of pirates including Captain Cropper.

Frankie vs the Pirate Pillagers is a fast paced, novel book aimed children aged 5+, although I would say it is most suitable for 7-9 year olds. The idea of Frankie and his friends being magically transported to play against people from a variety of backgrounds and eras is entertaining, reminiscent of Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree books. I can imagine the Frankie series would particularly appeal to reluctant readers and boys who have become disinterested in books, partly due to their celebrity author. The brightly coloured cover certainly draws the eye in and would make the book attractive to children.

I got this for a friend's seven-year-old and will no doubt receive informed feedback in due course, as he's football mad - I'm not, but I did read it because I love children's books, and I was charmed I must say.

The premise reminded me of one of my all-time favourite movies, Big, with Tom Hanks (which interestingly was co-written by Anne Spielberg, sister of Steven, although Penny Marshall directed) and it's a neat premise because it has potential to take you anywhere. Frankie wins a beaten-up old football at a fairground and without giving the story away, the ball takes Frankie, his friends Charlie and Louise and his dog Max on a magical journey to the ocean main, where they have to win a game against a bunch of pirates in the Fantasy League if they are ever to return home..

I see that one reviewer here rather unfairly doubted whether it was written by Frank Lampard at all, which he should take as a compliment because he writes very well - writing for children requires discipline and quite a light touch, and IMHO he shows both. You can't help liking the hero - he loves his mum, insists on fair play and doesn't like to show off, although he has the skills.. My favourite line is where Charlie steps on Lou's console and cracks the screen. She thinks it's broken, and her dad always told her not to take it out of the house, so this is bad. Frankie puts his hand on her shoulder and says solemnly, 'It might still work.' Excellent :)

Whether I send for the rest of the series as the titles are released will depend on said feedback from seven-year-old, but I see there's one called Frankie vs the Cowboy's Crew, and that's mine because I may not be into football but I'm definitely into westerns.

This is a good first attempt at children's fiction from Frank. Plenty of adventure in a football themed story. I can see the characters which the author has invented in my mind and enjoyed the well-written book. I like the way Frankie picks up the litter and won't cheat....teaching the young readers how to behave!

I brought this for my 6 year old sons birthday, his face was a picture as he opened it. He is a massive Frank Lampard fan and had only been talking about the book with friends a few days before. He has just started to read he 1st chapter and said he was enjoying it so far.

My son who's 8 and football mad said that he really enjoyed this book. It isn't very thick though so only took him 2 nights of 30 min bedtime reading to finish it. Delivery and condition of the book was really good.

My 5-year-old son says: It's very good, and there's loads of pictures. And I love it very very much. Frankie loves kicking a ball and he's the best player in the whole world. And I like Frank Lampard - he's very nice. And he wrote it for me.

it's amazing that only one ball can form into a adventure and it all happened in only one day! I read the whole book in one go and my Mum has now ordered the next one. I love football and this book is all about it.
