The previous instalment in Frank's story was recently at number one in the 'humorous fiction' category. Frank Derrick's Holiday of a Lifetime will also make you laugh, but I feel that pigeonholing it as 'a funny book' belittles what it has to offer. There were numerous poignant moments which really showed the power of family in typically understated ways. As in the previous book, you get a sense of loss as Frank recalls memories of his wife and I found these moments to be more moving this time round. Far from 'the difficult second novel', I think Morrison has surpassed himself here.
Anyone who is a fan of Jim's music or previous writing will know to expect excellent writing. Of course, this is what elevates a straightforward plot to something wonderful. There were sections I had to go back and re-read because the language was just beautiful. Often these moments would be describing a simple snippet of everyday family life in a way that brought out the magic from the mundane. I suppose that would be my overall reason for loving the book: there's no need for flashy plot twists when you can be caught out by the description of a daughter and granddaughter doing the cooking. I sincerely hope we get to see more through Frank's eyes in the future. He has a way of making you rethink what you're used to seeing.
The endearing, funny and gentle Frank exchanges his lonely life in the bleakly British any- town-any-where Fullwind-on-Sea, for the glitz and sunshine of Los Angeles to spend time with his daughter and grand-daughter. It’s a bittersweet emotive story about loneliness, love, loss and old age but at its heart, it explores the real meaning of family with immense compassion and considerable humour
Morrison is first and foremost a master of words and “Frank Derrick’s Holiday of a Lifetime” is beautifully written in his trademark economical style. It’s an absolute joy to read because you know that every word is so carefully chosen; but its strength also lies in the structure and the clever narrative weaves that underpin the story. He brilliantly develops likeable and believable characters and has ultimately written a timeless book to cherish-it’s a book to read slowly and savour every moment.
With the help of Frank, I've been to LA. I've seen it now, through Frank's eyes and don't ever need to bother going. I am now sitting and waiting for the third Frank Derrick book, so please, Jimbob, get writing.
