Make no mistake. The only possible reaction to this record is, "Why haven't I heard this before? Why isn't it better known?"; then you press play and listen right thru to the end, again.
It's hard to believe some Pixies fans might not have sailed with Frank when he unveiled this masterpiece in 1993, but for any who are new to either Frank or the Pixies, this is vital to your musical education. Pure joy from first to last. It's as if everything was leading up to it; an album that has mainsteam accessibility but with the most uniquely idiosyncratic lyrics imaginable.
Don't wait another moment. A neglected gem is before you. Buy it and spread the word.

What a blast of an album! Many of the tracks jump out and grab you to theextent you find yourself unexpectedly singing a long whilst jumping aboutlike a loon. 'I heard Ramona Sing' and the slinky beat of 'ten percenter'do it for me, but this by no means exhausts the fun to be had on thisalbum. The tunes come as thick and fast as the chord & time signiturechanges do. There is a real feeling of getting a whole bunch of new ideasdown and this just might be the weakness in the album as by Frank's nextalbum 'Teenager of the Year' there is more simplicity in the songs addingto the fun and energy. Overall though if you've got 'teenager' you mostcertainly should have this one and if you like to rock, then Frank (andthis album) is for you.

Wow!! Took about six concentrated listens for the six or seven outstanding tracks to emerge like haunting polaroid images. If you've bought this and are an impatient listener - please take your time. This is just behind the two great Pixie's albums Doolitle and Bossa Nova. Masked, but not ruined, by much grungy guitar - the melodies and lyrics gradually reveal a serious grown-up pop sensibility that is an absolute joy - that bubble in the chest. I'm a harsh critic, my softer alt ego would give this five stars. The anti hero imagery and boring cover nearly put me off - ha ha. This guy is no faker/pretender/interloper/copiest, but really has a song writing gift.

No wonder Bowie rated Pixies so high - and there are flickers of the real 70s Bowie in this somewhere, without any Jobriath type aping. There are subtle moments of ethereal lift that the Pixies scattered throughout their best work. Hell, i don't even like what some earth people call Grunge - but this aint that. A 2nd cousin in a more developed country perhaps.

There are a generous amount of tracks (15)and this works against the album, diluting it somewhat. I believe that the age of the b-side passed a long time ago. We don't need no more b-sides dude - as if there wasn't enough music. I'm not complaining, i just think it hides the wonderfulness of the album behind quirky inoffensive musical exercise. Why do that, when 12 tracks would carry the project to the premier league? (Ok, release a b-side album for the fanatics if you like) - reduce the squad - you don't need the support team - mix the the metaphors and take away the scaffolding. More than well done Frank - i'll check out Teenager of the year next.

This terrific album makes me wonder why we give platforms to all the young indie bands with nothing to say.

I discovered this album when my daughter went to college and was packing up her CDs into a box.
Quickly played it and was grabbed straight away by the energy and unusual riffs. Kept it for myself, downloaded it on iTunes and have been playing it ever since.
Am now hooked on Franks music and cannot get enough of it.
This is seriously good American Rock with great lyrics and deserves to be aired a lot more often.
Buy it and you will be rewarded with music by a great American artist.

Frank's first solo album is brilliant, mixing numerous styles. Right from the start it has the vitality and power of the best Pixies stuff, and sounds like brash metal ('Ten Percenter'), sleek pop ('Two Spaces'), genius pomp-rock ('Los Angeles') and anthemic, sing-along stuff ('Don't Ya Rile Em'), and there's even a cover of the Beach Boys' 'Hang on to Your Ego'. There are great moments, my favourite being the end of 'Ten Percenter' and Frank screaming 'Jerk! I'm a Jerk!' The main thing you need to know about this album is it's just enormous fun to listen to, it's witty and sounds amazing. Frank proves himself to be a great songwriter even without the Pixies. The man's a genius. If you're a Pixies fan, you'll love Frank already, so buy it; if not, but you just like your music rich and entertaining, then buy it too. Oh, and it has some of the funniest sleeve art I've ever seen.
Long live Frank Black!
Pete
