This is a true love story, with some of the strongest characters in it I have come across in a long time - not in terms of personality but in terms of morals and old fashioned values. They have more integrity that I fear I would have were I in this situation.
I'm not one to put any stock in fate but couldn't help be drawn in by the premise that "everything happens for a reason".
Let's start with Melanie, a young woman who had her heart broken and has struggled to recover and rebuild herself. A selfless young woman who has devoted her life to caring for people who are at the end of their lives, the terminally ill. How she copes with her latest assignment, to care for the wife of the man who left her heart shredded, is beyond admirable!
Then there's Xavier. At first I thought he was a hard, cold, detached man but I soon came to realise that along with holding onto a lifetimes' worth of guilt over how he's treated his wife, he's also still deeply in love with his first love, the one that got away. The poor man finds himself torn between his feelings for two women - he's in love and loyal to his wife but never quite got over Melanie.
Now Alyssa....Wow! She is a strong woman! She has stuck with a man who has, at times, treated her appallingly and who, at least to begin with, was still in love with another woman. Alyssa is selfless and at the darkest moments of her life, is able to put her pain and heartache aside to look to the future and see what would be best for others.
This book flowed beautifully. It drew me in and forced me to invest emotionally, leaving me utterly drained at times - but in a good way. It had me crying in sorrow and shouting in frustration and wanting to handout a fair few slaps.
I highly recommend this book - 5 stars from me.
Worth all the tears I cried...
Check, check, and check.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will not hesitate to read her other books or recommend them.
Melanie and Xavier met years before the story is written, but when Xavier's wife is dying it's Melanie that turns up at his door to help him with his wife... Xavier's life moved on he married had a son, he never choose the way things turned out but he settled thinking he would never see Melanie again, he loved his son and towards the end he did realise how much he loved his wife. But it was to late. He couldn't right his wrongs, luckily his wife is awesome! Fell in love with her fantastic character,
Melanie never forgot Xavier, she worked hard made a life for herself but never got emotionally attached to anyone she finished college got a good career, which lead her back to Xavier.
This story was extremely well written emotions, feelings she never missed anything out...
A must read.
My only one question:
Will Xavier's brother get his own story?
Pretty please :D
"Without trust, we have nothing."
That quote totally got me hooked and I bought the book!
Wow...where to start...this book is beautifully written...emotional & heartbreaking but also inspiring on many levels.
Xaviers family is a beautiful family...Mel is in some ways so broken but also a nurturing and strong person and how the devastation is worked through is heartwarming to see and feel....because yes I felt it all to my very bones.I cried...I smiled but was never frustrated and that for me is why this book is so special ....there was no big back and forth through the whole book...no lines crossed just broken and sad people working their way through a terrible situation and finding that little bit of light that we all deserve so I thank you Sloan for this breathtaking book.
When i started i expected a beautiful but difficult read given the subject matter however the latter half of the book i felt the emotions and character interactions were repetative with little developement so when i finished it was an ok thats it feeling not a wow with ugly tears feeling.
So is it worth a look ? Yes, it`s a good easy chick lit read, is it one that will stay with you , book hungover and talking about, No in my opinion.
* ARC received for an honest opinion *
