What I will say is that I loved the way the story was written, the authors work has a very elegant ebb and flow.
The book centres on Reagan Dalton and Striker.
The three of them grew up together and were practically inseparable but when Reagan reached 18 things changed, Striker stepped up to let her know that he wanted more than the friendship they had had. I liked the fact that the author made Striker wait for Regan, it was nice to see him respecting the boundaries of age. But when he broke her heart not long after I was so mad at him.
Enlisting in the military Striker is sure that he is doing what he needs to do, he has to get himself as far away from Reagan as he can. This si one sort of angst I could have done without. His disappearance sent Reagan plummeting into a black hole of depression, one that she really struggled with.
I liked that the author took on such a sensitive but poignant subject, depression can be so debilitating and this author gave view to the pain that her heartbreak and depression heaped upon her.
Dalton propped her up, he held her up while she struggled to find the strength to stand tall all on her own again and through it all she realised that the man by her side was the man that she wanted to be with forever and months later Dalton and Reagan tie the knot.
We fast forward eleven years and they are parents to three young boys and at first glance everything appears to be perfect, but everything is not what it seems because Dalton is harbouring secrets from Reagan… and that is never a good sign.Read more ›
This is book one in a series and wow what a good start to a series this really is, the blurb instantly grabbed my attention so I had to find out more and its about adults.
Reagan is a mother to three boys - Dylan, Max and Colt and a loving wife to Dalton, who by the way is completely in love with his wife and children and works his socks off to provide a good life for them, so why has he been keeping secrets from his wife?
Striker was Dalton and eventually Reagan's childhood friend, he didn't have the best start to life and his upbringing wasn't the best but he had his two friends, they did everything together but one day Striker up and leaves without saying goodbye which leaves Reagan completely heartbroken and yet again she feels deserted on her eighteenth birthday, but Dalton is there to pick the pieces up and provide that stability she so desperately craves so in time she heals.
So how will Reagan now feel when there's a knock at the door?

In any case, what if the first man you truly loved disappeared without any explanation? Would you be devastated? Not know where to turn? Who to turn to in your grief? Would you allow his cousin, your other best friend in the whole world to put you back together and eventually, maybe end up with him instead? We never know what we would do in someone else’s footsteps unless we have walked them. In this story, Reagan (also known as Rea) lived this heartache and barely lived to tell about it.
She was devastated years ago (when she was only eighteen) and the love of her life, Striker, whom together with his cousin Dalton, had been her best friends for years. The three of them had done everything together and been each other’s support systems. Striker had waited until Reagan turned eighteen before he declared that his true feelings for her were as more than just as friends; and it appeared to be mutual. Yet when Striker disappeared, Reagan barely held it together. She was a mess and went into a deep depression. Dalton had to remind her to eat and even to get up each day. She was drowning.
But this is where I found my first wish. There was a little bit of looking back at that day where he declared his feelings for her but it was just that once. We learned how he was feeling and what he did, and we “heard” her say she felt the same, but that’s where the scene ended. There was no other looking back to their romance as it began (other than the declaring scene). When I read a romance, the best part of it (for me) is to “see” the couple actually fall in love (or at least being newly in love). When I learn a couple had fallen in love in a book without experiencing any of it along with them, it feels like I’ve missed out on something special.
Also, although this is a romance, there isn’t a clear delineation of which couple we are supposed to love. Honestly, I loved how Striker and Reagan loved each other – but she’s married to his cousin/best-friend and he’s an honorable man. He will not cross that line and be with Reagan despite the fact that she’s his one and only love and she is torn between the two men she loves. When a book is a romance genre novel, I kinda like to know which couple I am following and in this one, although I think it’s Striker (the cliff-hanger, remember?), I’m not completely sure. And just in case you’re worried about this triangle, if cheating offends you, you are in the all-clear thus far (and for all I know, there may never be any; I obviously do not know either).
When Reagan’s husband Dalton needs to leave town for about a month, he asks Striker to come watch out for his family; knowing full-well how much his wife has always felt torn between the two of them in her heart. Plus, he knows Striker is in love with Reagan too. He says he trusts both of them - but really, this feels like throwing a bit of gasoline on a fire and standing back to see if it catches. It’s just odd to me.
And when Striker shows up, to Reagan it seems out of the blue, she’s completely thrown for a loop. She hasn’t seen him since the day he left over eleven years ago without a word and she has no idea her husband has maintained his relationship with Striker through the years…
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK. “Hold on, Dalt, someone is knocking at the door.” Rising from my seat I head to the door. “Yeah, Rea, listen before you answer that we need to talk.” Dalton says with anxiety. As his words register with me, I turn the corner to the foyer and catch a glimpse of my visitor through the door window. OH MY GOD! I am frozen in place. I can’t breathe and my heart is pounding in my chest. The hand holding my cell drops from my ear. I can barely register Dalton’s words coming through the earpiece. I’m in a state of shock, causing the phone to slip from my hand and crash to the floor. I stand there for a few moments, unable to pull my eyes away. My visitor turns and our eyes meet for the first time in eleven years….
I could just imagine the surprise of finding your lost, first, true-love on your doorstep after being gone for so many years! And Reagan reacts as anybody would – with shock! After reading this entire book, I basically understand Dalton’s reasoning for it but I think there could have been less jolting ways to go about it.
Also, this is this indie author’s first book. There were a few technical issues with it. They aren’t overwhelming but they are there from time to time. Considering what goes into producing a first book, I would say she did pretty well. As I write my reviews, now and again I will reread one of my published reviews and notice an error I had missed while proof-reading and slap myself on the forehead when I see one! It’s very difficult to catch them all by yourself once your brain begins to see the same words over and over again. You can just miss a few things. And this book has a few issues but they in no way affect the way this book can be enjoyed.
I really liked Striker. I liked how he owned everything about his life. He knows how deeply he loves Reagan and plays no games with it; he just acknowledges it as easily as he breathes. He loves Reagan’s kids and is a good “uncle” to them. As I said, he’s an honorable guy yet has that degree of sexiness that makes him pretty cool too. I liked how once he realized he had made a grievous mistake at one point, he owned that too. He felt genuine.
I couldn’t get quite the same handle on Dalton but then he was gone for a majority of the book.
There were some times I had some difficulty relating to the character of Reagan. I could understand the part of her that was a mother who was completely devoted to her kids and she genuinely likes them as people. I could even understand how in her heart she loves two men and how confusing this must be…
“How can I love two men, Dalton?” “Reagan, you always have. Why do you think you stayed mad at him for all those years?” he says. “How can you be okay with your wife loving another man? It’s not right, Dalton. It’s really hard for me to comprehend.” My eyes begin to blur as the tears build, but I try to fight them back. “I knew from the beginning what I was getting myself into. I’ve always know the kind of love that you and Striker have for one another. I can’t replace him, I was just the substitute.” “What? You are NOT a substitute! Is that what you think of our marriage?”...The tears finally break through my hold and race down my cheeks. I feel a weight bearing down on my chest. How could he feel that way? My love for him has always been real….
This book is one of those books that is full of conversations that is in a way similar to a study of human relationships. There are many facets within this story and I believe as this series (I’m not sure whether this has one sequel or whether it will be more than two books) progresses, we will learn more about some of the aspects still undiscovered thus far. And I’m seriously hoping we will get to see more of the history of each of these relationships as they progress.
I think this was a really amazing start to what I feel has the potential to be a very good future in publishing by this author. This book kept me interested and engaged throughout my reading of it. I became frustrated when I got to the end and saw I had to wait to see what would happen next! I will look forward to following her career as this author writes more in the future. And frankly, I hope book two happens soon – I really want to know what happens next!!!
This is Elizabeth Wills’ debut novel and let me tell you this book is so good!!!
Reagan and Dalton have been married for 10 years and have three young boys. Dalton loves Reagan unconditionally and Reagan battles with major depression and self-confidence issues. What I really loved about this book was that even though Reagan dealt with severe depression, she was determined to work through her problems for her and her family. In my eyes, Reagan was such a strong and courageous woman.
I was hooked from the first chapter and what direction I thought the story line was going in; I was so wrong. This book had me feeling so many different emotions that I could not put my kindle down, and read it in one sitting.
As you read the story you learn that Dalton will be away from his family for a few months due to work and asks his cousin Striker to stay with his family. Striker and Reagan were each other’s first love and the chemistry between the two of them is still there.
“maybe what i feel for rea is more than love. i swear our hearts speak to each other. that they beat to the same rhythm, even after all the years we’ve spent apart.”
I can’t recommend this book enough. Now if your like me and can’t stand cheating in a book, don’t worry as you will not be screaming at your kindle. This book takes a direction that will leave you feeling for all 3 of them. I could tell easily what the big reveal was going to be but it still made me cry for Dalton and Reagan. This does end on a cliffhanger but it won’t make you scream, instead it will make you long for book 2.
“real love is something that wraps itself around the muscle, beating deep within your chest, and feeds life to every part of your body. you can’t escape it, even if you try, because once it’s taken root, you will die without it.”
This is the first book I read written by Ms. Wills and I really enjoyed the story.
Reagan has the perfect life as an adult. With her three kids and loving husband, Dalton, she has a peaceful life. But she has not had it easy in the past with abandonment issues and suffering from depression.
Dalton, Reagan and Striker were really close growing up. Her first love, Striker, up and left her to join the military and didn’t even say good bye. She had to glue the pieces of her broken heart back together while battling a broken heart and depression; she managed to pick up the pieces with Dalton's help. With Her husband's love and unwavering strength, but with Striker returns, everything she knows will be turned upside down.
Secrets will be unveiled and the truth will come to the surface. Remember secrets always comes out when you least expect them too.
Dalton seems too good to be true he was so selfless and kind and we can’t forget understanding. I loved him and hated him. Striker was mysterious in his own way but he grew on me.
The one I really didn’t like was Reagan I just wanted to punch her lights out and scream at her. She seemed selfish at times and only thought about her feelings but what about everybody around her and their feelings. I also did not agree with some of her choices and reactions to certain situations.
This book has an Interesting plot with good writing and a few twist and turns. I am curious for the next book though and am getting ready to read it tonight.

The book had a great premise but I have to admit that the only character I really felt a connection to was Dalton. He was so selfless and kind. I loved him. Striker was mysterious in his own way and Reagan...I hate it when I cannot connect with the heroines and this was the case. I cannot explain why I couldn't feel her pain and misery...I also did not agree with some of her choices and reactions to certain situations.
Interesting plot and good writing even though I found the twists a bit predictable. I am curious for the next book though.
