Donna interweaves her fascinating and inspiring story with a discussion about disability. I am also a parent of a child with cerebral palsy. I did like this book, because Donna made me think about how I think about people with disabilities - what is a disability? Donna's discussion about capability, following on from her reading of and thinking about Amartya Sen's work on poverty as deprivation of capability (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capability_approach), has changed the way I think about disability, and my work as a rehabilitation engineer.

Thoughtful, thought-provoking and beautifully expressive. I am wowed by the courage of Donna Thomson - both in the living, fighting and writing that went into this account. Cannot wait to see what she does next.

Not an easy read by far. Donna Thompson is obviously an extremely intelligent woman as reflected in her writing, but as a Mother of a child with Cerebral Palsy I did not seek comfort at all in this book, unlike other memoirs I have read. It talks about the political side of disability rights etc more than the emotional aspects of having and coping with a disabled child.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important and profound book 25 Aug. 2016
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
It is a rare and beautiful book that puts a human face on issues that merge medicine and politics, economics and love. But now, look no further. Thomson has not only expanded my understanding of caring and caregiving, but also strongly underlined for me, without rancor but with superhuman warmth, that the best societies are those that understand the complexities of a meaningful life, its infinite aspects, our interconnectedness, and that we all reflect our humanity by the desire to cherish and embrace every citizen.I am now on my fourth reading of this book, have recommended it to friends who work in academic fields of social organization and those who are themselves caregivers. It is not hyperbole to say that if I were in charge of handing out awards for important writing., this would be at the top of my list. Wendy Miller

4.0 out of 5 stars True Value of Life and Needed Supports 9 July 2014
By Sharon Liff - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
An excellent book that shares the trials and tribulations that many of us with severely disabled children encounter but few truly know.
The value of our children's lives and the hopeful community support is brought out to make more people think of the true value of all of our lives.
Thank-you Donna for writing the book.
We follow in your footsteps and learn along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whether you have a disabled son or daughter or just want to know more 31 Aug. 2015
By sundaymorning - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
It was great to read this book, as it seriously addressed key problems for me as the mother of a young man with profound disabilities. It is not so much a 'how to do it' book as an exploration of how to think about it. A friend who is a professor in the movement points out that many parents say the experience of having a disabled child opened their eyes and their hearts in significant ways -- and some people can't give enough, and others can't take enough. It surely changed my life, and this book helped me think about the balance.
