The author's ironic wit is ever present in this clever novel, which combines mystery, contemplations of mid-life, and odd atmospherics in a story that is hard to categorize but easy to enjoy. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 30 April 2013
By JRH - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is a really well written novel, very nicely paced with enough plot twists to keep the reader hooked till the end. I found myself wanting to read "just one more chapter" - which I did until I had finished the book in just over a day! The main character, Orton, is clearly a well meaning soul, which sets him up for quite a few sticky situations courtesy of newspaperman Hal. Fans of Carl Hiasen will enjoy this novel, and I look forward to hearing what escapades Orton and Hal get up to in the future. More Please!

I did not care much for this book at all. I did not like the writer's style. In my opinion, it started very slowly and really did not get much better. I kept wondering, "How can he just run around checking on this and that and not even work? Is he retired?" Finally, when I was about ready to give up on the book, it started giving some details--in bits and pieces. I could not decide if he was married, or just had a girlfriend he was living with. That question was eventually answered. I will say that the ending did catch me by surprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific debut novel from local Marin author 24 May 2013
By S. Leigh Shemaria - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Thoroughly enjoyable first novel from local Marin author.
In Orton, the main character, the author creates a man we feel we know, and who takes us along through the intricacies of the story line with a self depreciating sense of humor and awareness that makes us want to know him more.
With a witty writing style and choice of phrase that makes his work stand out from the pack, this is a fun, clever read. Watch carefully for the brilliant link to the title at the end of the story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense! 8 Dec. 2013
By Ann - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I love suspense as well as interesting characters so this book definitely worked for me. The relaxed pace, rather than constant frantic action, also seemed "real". The author's use of language was excellent, especially for a first time author. It was a great read and hope to see more of his work! I have been reading a lot of Tana French's books and like her work for many of the same reasons.
5.0 out of 5 stars A book that makes you realize that you too could get caught up in trying to solve a crime. 17 July 2013
By Wendy Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book was chosen for my book group to read as the author is a local Marin guy. I don't usually read crime mysteries but I was hooked and read it in two days. I enjoyed how Orton the main character got caught up in the intrigue of what happened to his partner's friend. The suspense grew and I along with Orton wanted to get to the bottom of it. A highly entertaining read!
