Product description

About the Author

J. R. Handley is a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team. He is a veteran infantry sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and later the 28th Infantry Division. She is the kind of crazy that interprets his insanity into cogent English. He writes the sci-fi while she proofreads it. The sergeant is a two-time combat veteran of the late unpleasantness in Mesopotamia where he was wounded, likely doing something stupid. He started writing military science fiction as part of a therapy program suggested by his doctor, and hopes to entertain you while he attempts to excise his demons through these creative endeavors. In addition to being just another dysfunctional veteran, he is a stay at home wife, avid reader and all around nerd. Luckily for him, his Queen joins him in his fandom nerdalitry.

This, the second book in the series carries on the high standard of story telling we found in The Legion Awakes. It is difficult to believe that it is not the work of a well established author. Gather together battles between powerful adversaries; add in defections, treachery, power struggles and comradeship you end up just like the real world of today. Translate what you find into the future and it describes this book. The author very cleverly develops his characters and their scenarios then progresses each one a little at a time. However, at the end of each step he leaves the situation on a cliff hanger so it becomes hard to put the book down. Unlike exciting Hollywood films, where the man in the white hat never misses a shot and dodges every bullet from the man in the black hat, we do have losses on all sides. This leaves the reader building up a relationship with their favourite characters and constantly worrying if these characters will survive much longer.

Two aspects of the book did bother me: I nearly downgraded it to 4, but the story is too good to downgrade.
1) The number of personnel killed in action has tended to fall over the last 100yrs, but here they are back to Charge of the Light Brigade proportions.
2) The timescale to sort out problems and build tunnels and fortifications are unrealistic. In my experience of military service, in the time it takes Scipio to complete a task our leaders would be still be sitting around scratching their heads.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and heartily recommend it to everyone.

I love the storyline but I struggled with some of the detail. We had a legion trapped underground and therefore safely hidden from the enemy for 35 years that suddenly had hangers directly accessible from the outside. In the climatic battle, tanks were aiming not just at walls but at the tops of those walls from 100 miles away, oh and binoculars that enabled people to positively identify other individuals 100 miles away too. Kind of like delicious Swiss cheese with more holes than chees.

It's still still a joy to come across an author who just seems to have written a book in the style and pace that draws you in keeps you so interested that you want to read more yet are sad as you get closer to the end of the book. I can't wait for the next book!

Great read. The authenticity of the writers own experience surfaces every so often which sets this trilogy apart from many 'space marines' operas. The milion mile stare stares back at you even on a different planet at a different time.

Have really enjoyed this series so far. A little confusing at times with so many characters and factions interacting but the style of writing more than compensates. Strong and engaging storyline. Would recommend to any sci-fi combat fan.
