From the Back Cover

Formula One racing is the pinnacle of motor racing around the world. These days, the sport is a truly global circus. At almost every race on the calendar, more than 120,000 spectators cram into the grandstands and spectator banking, all vying for a view of the millionaire superstar drivers. At the same time, in 150 countries worldwide, more than 300 million people tune in to watch the fight for glory in the comfort of their front rooms.

Formula One Racing For Dummies shares insight into why this sport attracts so much interest and so many devotees   whether the fans be following drivers, worshipping cars, satisfying their fascination with technology, or simply soaking up the atmosphere at the track. This spirited guide gives you the nitty–gritty on this wildly popular race, answering questions like

  • Why do Formula One cars have wings and why are they covered in logos?
  • How does a race begin without a green light to signal the start?
  • How do Formula One drivers prepare, mentally and physically, for a race?
  • How can I get an autograph of my favorite driver?
  • What strategies do drivers and their teams use during a race?
  • How does Formula One compare with other forms of motor racing?
  • Why is a Formula One car still a car, even though it has no roof, doors, or bonnet?
  • Why is the business side of the sport so important and what′s the role of the sponsor?
  • Besides the driver, who are the other people on the team?
  • What does winning feel like and how do drivers go about doing just that?

Considering that Formula One racing is matched only by the Olympics and the football World Cup in terms of worldwide fans, this engaging reference is a must–have for finding the information you′re after without plodding through reams of pages or stalling out in a cover–to–cover read. You can speed through the basics or take time relishing a look at each circuit. And for those who want more than words to bring the race to life, a full–color insert celebrates the sheer spectacle of the great race   from crowds to crashes, incredible skill and technology to amazing finishes!

I have to say that I am not the F1 fan, my 11 year old son is, he has found this great fun to read. Any question he has about the sport, he can just dip into this book and the answer is sure to be there. It is certainly a book for people who like to know every little detail of their subject.

The book was published in 2004 and therefore outdated, If you (as i am) have a beginners interest in the Grand Prix an outdated book is of no value at all. I am now looking for another (more updated book) to read! Any suggestions?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Intro (even if a bit out of date) 19 July 2016
By Gadget Wisperer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I am newly serious to F1 - as in I have been a casual fan for decades, but decided this year that I wanted to really dive into the sport as a serious fan. My brother has been a serious fan for years and I needed a way to catch up on the basics. This was a great introduction to F1 behind the scenes. My only complaint, this text has not been updated in 10 years and it's not available on the Kindle (my guess is there is some correlation there). It goes into the cars (though needs 2016 update with all new engines), the teams, the drivers, the fans, some of the tracks (but here is another area where updates are needed as F1 has added a couple of tracks).

A bit surprising it has not been updated with all the growth in world wide F1 interest and two Xbox One games on the market, XBox F1 2015 (and the soon to be released Xbox F1 2016). Maybe it's in the pipeline.

FYI - This seems to be a British publication - my copy shipped from the UK. That's okay, it's a British sport - so it makes it more authentic?!

DUMMIES PUBLISHER REQUEST: Publisher - please update this text - the sport is ever evolving. There is even an entirely new off-shoot called Formula-E with all electric cars!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay but not current 2 July 2013
By C. Wilson - Published on Amazon.com

The book gives a general idea about Formula 1 racing but it is outdated. It's good for historical information as well. Some aspects of F1 racing have changed so much that it has made learning about F1 confusing. I'd like to see the same book but in a current edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs Updating! 13 May 2010
By Don Pritchett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
At one level, the book is a good basic summary of F1 racing -- the cars, history, tracks, teams and drivers, tips on attending a race, and some of the strategies involved. If you're a F1 junkie like I am, its all good.

More objectively though, the book is dated... with info current up to about 2003/04, which is many respects is ancient history for F1 (new different changed teams/drivers/tracks/rules now), so if I was just getting into F1 as a viewer, this book would be really confusing since so much of the info is out of date.

4.0 out of 5 stars learn about European racing and worldwide appeal 1 Mar. 2014

Before I heard about the movie "Rush" , I thought I should get some background on the sport of F1 before I watched the film. I learned a lot about the sport and how important how every person on a racing team plays a vital role if each team wants to continually compete on the circut year after year.

didn't really go into detail. Like read but the small stuff was completely ignored such as the DRS, braking zones, etc.
