As is now well-known, Ronnie Barker was not only a brilliant comedy actor but also a very impressive comedy writer, and this collection covers his whole career. Well-edited, it shows what a versatile crafter of comedy he was, creating everything from quite basic short sketches to dazzling solo turns and even the odd elaborate ensemble piece. I'm probably in a tiny minority but I was never madly keen on his tongue-twisting exercises in verbal acrobatics on The Two Ronnies - like Danny Kaye's routines before him, they were easy to respect technically without always actually making me laugh. On paper, however, I find them much easier to like: the wordy playfulness is somehow more engaging without the sound of the strain of performing it. And when Barker combines the clever word play with strong character comedy, such as in his glorious 'Fork Handles,' the effect is astonishingly good - you can hear not just the words but also the thoughts as each character reacts to the other. This volume represents a fine memento of a much loved man, as well as a treasure trove of comic ideas, routines, exercises and observations that reward repeated reading. A good present for the comedy fan.
